ok, after a little bit of internet research, it seems the maximum RAM for this laptop is indeed 2GB. bummer.

"The reason the 945 doesn't recognize a full 4GB of RAM is because 750MB of memory addresses are taken up by PCI Devices. The 945 had to support 32bit only CPUs so it can't cheat and extend the PCI addresses to the upper end of the 64bit pool. The newer Santa Rosa chipset will let you see all 4GB because it was designed exclusively with 64bit capable CPUs (on a 64bit OS that is)."

went from 2gb to 4gb on a MBP 2.16ghz only 3.2 gb are recognised but it is better to use 2x 2gb sticks then 1x1 gb and 1x2gb sticks because of the dual channel ability [not shure as an anti IT guy if i explained that correctly, however it does make a difference in speed], and yes do it! it is worth it!!!

Remember, XP Home (and Media Center) only allows 2Gb RAM usage per application. You could slam as much physical RAM as you want in your machine, but applications will only be allowed to use 2Gb (although you could use mutliple instances of Live and rewire them together, I guess).

Trust me, I'm going through the same thing right now; it sucks. Perhaps it's time to switch to Vista. Or, I hear XP Pro allows you to insert a /3Gb switch in the boot.ini file to allow for more RAM per application.

I have 4 gigs of RAM in my system, and recently tried the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file. Windows would not even boot! I had to boot to another OS drive to edit it back. I am using SP3 and Windows sees 3.75 gigs fo RAM though.

The same with mine. Nevertheless there are 3GB running in my system with XP, and 4GB are possible, actually. Do not always trust the manufacturer's specifications. You may be as lucky as I am to be able to stack more RAM into your computer ;) .
