Headphone jack - MBP

Post by grizzler » Wed Apr 02, 2008 5:03 pm

Hello Abletoners, i am calling on your assistance in a hour of need. Today using my MBP as you do cracking some tunes out on the train some Fu**er walked past and bashed my headphone cable, pulling it out the socket. He said sorry and walked off. So i came to putting the headphone back in and half the jack is still in the MBP 8O 8O 8O

Ideas on how to get it out other than stick some superglue on a match! Surly someone must of had the same sorrta problem. Its wedged in like a goodun. Think this will be covered under my Apple care??

Take it to a car mechanic.

The super glue idea actually sounds like a good one. Just make sure you hit only the jack and not the computer.

In there too tight for a fine pair of tweezers?

Sucks regardless.

believe it or not, this happened to me. you have to find a way to get it out, because the headphone jack is on the logic board, and sealed there. to replace the headphone jack, they'd have to replace the logic board.

try taking it to a watch repair center, jewler, or some other small mechanical type person.

I managed to use some of my mom's jewlery supplies to get it out.

Fine tweezers work, I've had this happen and thats how I got the little plug leftover out. Hobby shops often have 'em... or if there's a medschool near you, go to their bookstore.

bastard.

because of similar accidents, i use a little elbow adaptor now between the headphone jack and the port so it runs the cable along the side of the lappie rather than sticking out.

i wouldnt go near the jack with superglue, how about a blob of blu tack on the end of a tiny screwdriver? again though youd have to be careful not to leave any on the inside of the port.

I have repaired many generations of apple laptops experiencing this kind of trauma...
the lowest risk solution is to have a qualified technician open the laptop and gain direct access to the jack. Typically a pin can be inserted in the opposite side of the 1/8" jack to eject the remaining debris. The tech can also repair any damage to the jack as a result of the accident (damaged or bent contacts, damaged jack body, or damaged solder points on the PCB the jack is mounted to).
I cant think of a sig

No chance! Power tools and Mbp do not mix!

what about a giant magnet??

Oh, right.

i dont know about your MBP, but if the jack is anything like a TRS connection, pushing the detritus further back will just dislodge it into the casing somewhere.

I tried googling, and the only diagrams I could find suggested the plug might be self-contained.

hey, firstly the port is sealed at the back, so pushing it further in only makes it harder to get out.

second, the audio ports on a MBP are not on the logic board, they are on a separate board along with all the other left hand side ports. so it's not a total logic board replacement if it needs replacing.

it's not usually covered under applecare but who knows, maybe you get a super nice apple employee who will fix it anyway.

otherwise it's probably cheaper to get someone to replace that left IO board.

your not in NYC are you?
