Starting off

Post by Dave513271 » Mon Apr 28, 2008 6:25 pm

Hey everyone; im 20 and i am really getting into house music (ex. daft punk) and so i want to try creating the sounds and music of house. Problem is i have no idea about how to use any of this stuff so maybe you guys can help me out on this. Basically what i want to know is how to start off, what to get and how to learn the basics (cheap if possible since im in college) and then what to do from there.

Thanks a bunch guys

Read the Live manual, #1.
Be creative and find inspiration, #2.
Wing it, #3.

Try and spend less time emulating Daft Punk, and more time experimenting w/ your own creativity and imagination. I think you'll get much more enjoyment out of your music.

Get yourself a midi keyboard, probably, and just experiment with Live's synth presets. You'll eventually figure stuff out after playing w/ it for a bit.

I'd suggest going to a site like About.com and reading the articles they have on MIDI or computer music for a general idea on what you need to get started.

To emulate DP you need to get two Lemurs. And a space suit.

i have a hp 1.46 ghz dual cpu, 1014 mb RAM, and yea ableton live version 7
so i have the essentials i guess

good point about finding my own style tho, i was planning on just using them as a starting point to learn the basics and then move off into other areas

Do yourself a favor and learn Ableton inside and out. It's ridiculously powerful software once you unlock a workflow that suits you. Don't be like I was for a long time and waste your time looking for 3rd party plugins rather than actually spending time learning the program.

But yeah, IMOP trying to replicate songs or sounds, is a good way to learn how to synthesize or create sounds and learn production techniques...
