I'm mostly a pc guy so I cannot help you on that side but you know, there is a thing in 2008 called google that can help you alot

are you on 10.5.2 ?

install menumeters and turn them on. watch your system performance.

in terms of pure processing power, plugins can suck up your cpu, but if your hard drive is taxed that will cause audio dropouts faster than anything.

you can watch disk, cpu, network and memory at the same time with menumeters, and its just in the top of your screen in the taskbar.

when things get bad, take a look at where the load is. as dr house always says: if you can find it you can fix it!
