It likely wouldn't be on the website, but as the Terms Of Service you're supposed to read (and no one does) during the installer routine. I'd rerun the installer, and see if it's mentioned there. If not....

They suck. Not being able to sell your software SUCKS. They're right they can't check that you're still using it but WTF you BOUGHT it in the first place you could have downloaded a crack (they are usually easier & faster to install as well).

You know what yo need to do? Post your story on KVR! That'll teach them.

Yes, but others are fair and have it on the website:
4 clicks away on cycling74.com:
Software
Returns and license transfers are only accepted if purchase is within 30 days and the software has not been authorized. This applies to all of the following software: Max/MSP, Jitter, Cyclops, Pluggo, Mode, Hipno, Radial, UpMix and Octirama

Returns and license transfers are not accepted for the Cycles and M products.
And most others have something like "how do i sell / transfer a license"
in their FAQs.

Good idea to check the installer - you never know....

I think the biggest issue here is the fact that they are canceling the OP's license, which is the real dick move. They could simply deny the transfer, at which point the new owner would not be able to register the software, and/or the OP would return the money to the new owner. I don't see why ReFX has to go the extra-dick-mile and cancel the software over a misunderstanding.

Quite honestly, it's behavior like this that encourages pirating Vanguard, which is about as easy to get on the web as bestiality-porn.

The question as to if you'd want to is also a good one...I agree with Condra...Vanguard has not aged well. It has always sounded thin to me, and it doesn't come close to synths of that era, like z3ta or Sytrus. As for Nexus, well, that was a combination of Vengeance samples with a sampling engine. The premise sounded good - a big ol' tarnce machine. Sadly, you couldn't do 10% of what you can with just a regular sampler and getting those samples directly from Vengeance, or say VIPzone. So ultimately, Nexus got a bad rap, and I think the overpriced comments are entirely deserved.

My two cents. Sorry for your experience. You should point ReFX to this thread, but I doubt it would do you much good.

I'd also add that although I disagree with vendors who don't allow transfers (if it's supposed to be like hardware, you should be able to sell it like hardware!), it's is the vendor's prerogative to decide on the license terms. The fact that it's "hidden" or you "did not know" is unfortunate for sure, but it doesn't really make the vendor automatically a dick (although, of course, they should make it easier to find out!!). Cakewalk for example is a great vendor that doesn't allow transfers, but by all estimation, the company is great to deal with, great for support, great for customer service. I recently bought a license for z3ta that was subjected to the RGC license allowing for transfers. Cakewalk had bought RGC but still honored the previous license so long as it hadn't been updated to the Cakewalk license, which then made resales unvalid. Their customer service helped me with the transfer and the update process. A very undick-like thing to do.

Anyways, I'll end my soap box with this link: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=91587 --it's on KVR and it's a list of vendors who don't allow transfers. Anyone wanting to buy or sell should have a general idea of will or won't allow transfers.

I would have to say the coolest people are at soniccharge.com and D-16.

These companies are part of our community,, adn really like being involved. I couldn't live without either of these companies wares, either.

Native instruments are ok, ableton has been very helpful in the past

Waves are complete assholes

+1, this is totally unbelievable... unless the EULA states something along the lines of "We reserve the right to cancel licenses if you attempt to transfer them" (and who the hell would do that in their right mind) then ReFX have broken their own EULA

lucky horse

ok sorry, back to subject...
refx, shame shame shame.... too bad coz i like quadrasid and i always though of getting it so i wouldn't bother my friend so much with his copy.... well, i think i will still buy it since it's something i do use a lot, and my friend is getting annoyed by me hogging his studio time...

but i think refx, and any other company for that matter should make these policies available to the public BEFORE a potential customer decides to buy their stuff, not after buying it. that's just wrong. a company has every right to use whatever policy or license procedure they want, but it should be available for easy interpretation by users out of respect to them. in a FAQ manner, or whatever.

that guy Mike needs a serious PR and customer service overhaul... :?

There's no doubt that developers have every right to set the terms of the agreement, but the fact is that there's a lot of choice out there and there are so many kind, helpful developers that treat you with respect, such as U-He, that are far more deserving of our cash. And there are just so many developers/companies that don't charge for transfers, like Urs, Native Instruments, arturia, GForce and the list goes on. I can understand having a transfer fee in some situations, but to be rude on top of it, or to be a dick as well as not even allow transfers is not only uncompetitive, but plain stupid on their part.
thefool wrote:just to clear it why i enjoy Tone2's policy: They DO have a 20€ license transfer fee, but i think thats fair enough. 20€ is not much more than a large pizza, and i like to support developers. Also because they do it manually and have to deal with shareit etcettera.
I have to respectfully disagree with you endorsment of tone2 as a model company. They aren't as bad as reFX, but the developer can be very defensive and rude at times as well. I'm sure they can very helpful and are probably nice guys, but I had my only bad experience of my life when I was trying out gladiator (which I love the sound of). I brought up a bunch of issues and I was told it was all my fault or my hosts fault (ableton) and one of my threads were deleted after he got quite rude with me. I noticed later on an update when I tried the demo again, that they had fixed everything I brought up. But I never got an apology and was even told to just go find another product! The whole time I did nothing but praise the synth while trying to help find bugs/problems. I noticed in a lot of other threads there that the developer gets way to defensive and dramatic with people who have reasonable requests. I just don't think that's good behavior , it makes people less confidant that the developer will be responsive to them, even if that's not true. And especially when charging a 30 dollar transfer fee when so many others don't, it's again uncompetitive when compared to other policies. I never posted about that experience as I didn't wish them any harm, but at the same time people should know about other peoples bad experiences to help them make the right buying choice.
