Vista Laptop to XP?

Post by buckman » Thu Jun 26, 2008 9:18 am

I have a Acer Aspire 5315 laptop that came with Vista home basic, and as others have said, its horrible!

Its slow and un-responsive even though I have 1GB Ram and fast processor..

So I would like to wipe and install XP Pro that i have here..

The only thing is that I can't get vista to boot from the CD like XP used to?

Everytime I re-boot ad=nd hold down F2 or delete key i still get a BIOS window saying would I like to boot VISTA in safe mode??

Anyone know how to get this laptop to boot from CD so i can install XP?

it can't be that hard can it? as im going out of my mind here! lol

I don't know why your lappy is not booting from the cd and still start the os, try changing the boot priority and be sure your xp cd is a real bootable one. One solution could be to remove the hard drive and to format it, no way vista will survive to this.

After, be sure to understand how to install your disk drivers into the winxp installation, I suggest you to use the nlite method, once it's done keep the cd.

How fast did you expect it to be with only 1GB of RAM? I'm guessing you also don't have a dedicated video card in this laptop either, so slice off a chunk of that 1GB for video memory too... of course it's slow. :-/ Any flavor of Vista will eat that alive.

RAM is so cheap, why not add some of that while you're at it?

Don't buy more RAM XP works great with 1gb here. Just "downgrade" fuck Vista!

theres no reason not to get more ram at the moment, with it being so cheap. even on XP the performance difference between 1 and 2 gig is considerable.

you also didnt mention what your audio interface is. this is as big a factor in performance as anything else.

1GB is fine for me at the moment, its all about getting Vista Off and XP on really...

Thanks for your replies, I will try that website link supplied above as this deals with my particular laptop...

Fingers crossed! -

I'd talk to Forge about this first. He had a hell of a time downgrading his vista PC laptop to XP. It might actually be easier getting vista to run smoothly.

Point taken. Haven't tried Vista yet. But yeah, XP drivers for all the computer's hardware will be needed. It's not going to be a simple case of throwing in an XP disk and hitting install.

Once xp see the disk, the rest is mostly a piece of cake except for the chipset.

Check the acer site for your notebook and check if xp drivers are avaible.

If they don't you can post on the acer forum asking for a driver link, never tried on acer forums but on the hp one it's pretty fast.

you can also use cpu-z http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php to identify missing components and search for the device driver direct on the company site.

often on laptop company site you can also browse for drivers related to a series and not just a particular model, you will often find compatible driver there too.

Be sure to install the chipset first

once you got the drivers, back it up in some safe place
