I'm debating firepod and motu 828, lil help?

Post by Johnisfaster » Fri Aug 08, 2008 5:52 pm

I'm debating between these 2 units. I need 8 in's and 8 out's and these are the only 2 I can find that aren't outragiously priced. I don't think I'm gonna have much use for the effects of the motu which makes me think I should go firepod. but the motu seems like a much better machine even without the effects so I wonder if I should spend the extra cash and get that.

can anybody report how they are working out with live?

latency? drop outs? how are their drivers? does it disconnect from your computer randomly? any problems? only joy?
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

I've used a Firepod for quite some time, and it has never let me down.
Rock solid on every computer I've used it with. WinXp desktop and
laptop and my Macbook Pro. Joy only.

Recently I've not needed all the inputs, so I switched with my friend, who
gave me his Firebox.. He got inputs, I got mobility. With my Macbook however,
I had to go back to OSX 10.5.2 to get the Firebox to run without pwersupply.

My friend is now easily recording 8 tracks with my Firepod on his old Dell laptop,
which is a 1gHz celeron, with 512mb ram running WinXp.

I cant say if the sound quality is as good as the motu (or better even), but for
stability.. my experience is that you cant go wrong with the Presonus stuff.

I have the 828 mk3 and am very happy with it. Not only is it an audio interface, it's also a stand alone mixer with efx. Since I got, I retired my Mackie 1402. It has two sets of opticals that can be Spdif or ADAT. The latest firmware 1.06 fixed all bugs. Sounds great to my ears.

Presonus all the way...

I had the 828 first and had trouble with it so I returned it. Got the Firestudio and haven't looked back. The reason I chose the Firestudio was because I had the Firebox a year ago and loved it. Thought I would be upgrading with the 828 but it did not sound better (or worse). It just didn't work right for me. Kept loosing connection to the system.

BTW - It was an XP system. I did however try it on my iMac and it worked great but I wanted a card that could work on both equally as well.

Good luck!
What is that? A .38?

38, 39, whatever it takes.
