I use ONLY operator.
you can do whatever you want to with it...
analog sounds, oscillator, FM, rythm, filtering, noise, pads, bass, leads, etc etc

I tested a lot of VSTi (native inst, and others) etc
the most stable stuff, powerful etc= OPERATOR
the reason is very simple: OPERATOR is included in the Ableton Live Framework... even if the "standard" VST create application connection, iti isn't the same thing !!!

Yep. Although it is great for "bread and butter" sounds, lets not forget, it is capable of some mind-blowing, room shaking, tweeter shattering shit too.
It is so good, it stops me from getting value out of Zebra and Massive.
Ableton haven't done much with Operator in the last couple of years. I really hope they put in a couple of minor improvements for version 8. A random button would be nice.

idea: use automap, but I don't know of hardware that does random stuff.condra wrote:A random button would be nice.
click on any device, the blue hand appears, hit a button to send random values to all the parameters.
has anyone hacked automap with max or bidule or any software programs?

Great idea. I know the answer is yes, but I have not done this personally. Using midi yoke or iac, I am pretty sure that this can be accomplished by writing a simple patch in max. It would not be as elegant but I have a hard enough time dealing with automap, beyond hacking it.Tone Deft wrote:idea: use automap, but I don't know of hardware that does random stuff.condra wrote:A random button would be nice.

Regarding Operator: It is more than enough to make some pounding, crisp and generally excellent music on its own.

Operator strikes a good balance between flexibility and ease of use.
It falls down in a big way mostly due to limitations in Live itself:
1. no midi controller support outside of live's automation system
2. ... so no recording automation in session view
3. no program changes
If it weren't for those I'd use it a lot more. Hopefully in Live 8 Ableton finally fix the midi mess they introduced in version 4.

i use it in almost everything, too.
the workflow is speedy.
i use it to make drums, pads, leads, and the even occasional acoustic instrument.
i wish there were a way to expand its view so that you could see the asdr of all 4 oscillators simultaneously - that would be the shit.

You possibly know me as a Ableton critic, so this is for you:Undercover Soul wrote:I am thinking of upgrading to 7 and I am not sure how much use Operator is. Do people really get a lot of use out of it?
I use plenty of VSTs and Sampler but don't really touch Operator. I have learnt it through tutorials etc so have experimented a bit.
Is it worth it's money and do people get a great deal of use out of it?
I wouldn´t buy Ableton´s instruments anymore. I have Operator and Sampler and what about automation in session view? Don´t work! Controller assignments? No, only song-based, not with the instument-preset. Sad sad sad. So I use other Softsyths and it works. So much about integrity. Operator sounds good, but there are betters synths that I can use in Logic too.
Sampler doesn´t read Samples from NI Kontakt. Better buy Kontact, you are open to the world of modern Sampling that´s farout more than Sampler can do and you can use it standalone. Cheers
