I'm on the lookout for free VST effects to replace my hardware effects units. I'm looking for VST effects for:
1) Flange
2) Phase
3) Delay
and so on and so forth... I don't really like the look of the built in live effects - I really need to see a VST front end that looks like a peice of hardware. If the live effects are good enough, though, I'll have to learn to use them. Should I percevere with the live effects or can someone suggest some free VST plug-in effects to try...

Certainly persevere with the built-ins, but try alternatives too. No sense tossing out an effect that might provide a capability or sonic texture you can't get otherwise.
That said, I do tend to favor fake-physical interfaces. Ableton's extremely simplified look is great, and I admire its functional austerity and ultra-readability. But something about pseudo-3D interfaces engages a part of the brain that uses the paws to tweak knobs and punch buttons and slide sliders -- it's silly but it's a real phenomenon for some people.
serotoninsteve's link is a good one. Here are a few links for more VSTs and VSTis.
The premier VST information source has got to be KvR. Discussion forums, news, reviews, all kinds of stuff, though it can get overwhelming:

This site doesn't seem to have been updated recently but it's got very good listings of VST instruments and effects. Click the links under "Instruments" or "Effects" in the left nav menu to go to the listings:

These are free... *IF* you buy one of their other products! (Jimmy Crespo "Rock Amp Legends" guitar amp sim, anyone?) "Free" phaser, sweeper, and tremolo:

Best of luck!

i think the ableton delays can't be beat, because they are tempo-synced with the master tempo.
i'm a big fan of Smartelectronix Ambience for reverb,
and the best sounding flanger i've found (the one that sounds the most like the old Boss flangers) is the mda Leslie. Also nice IMO is the Simulanalog Univibe.
