Reggae Drums and Percussion

Post by dominicw78 » Thu Aug 28, 2008 1:04 am

I'm trying to piece together a list of all the various acoustic drums and percussion used in Reggae.

Here's what I've got so far -

Drumkit
Timbales
Cowbell
Woodblock
Guiro
Vibraslap
Hit scrape
Cabassa
Shakers
Tamborine

What else is there used? I'm sure there are some more pieces I missed or don't know the name of.

that's pretty much it. If you want a good modern dancehall drumset, most of the stock triton sounds layered with a regular 5 piece yamaha kit will do you just find.

Now if you want to take it back like the 80's chop samples from many of the greensleeves records. If you are looking to recreate the sound a 5 piece drumset will do just fine along with 808, 909, and DR-55 will get you by.

The sopunds of Jamaica's independence up to the 70s can easily be recreated getting a bass stab to help build rhythme along wth a rhodes sound library alongside a decent B3 organ. 5 piece drumsets get the job done, but make sure the kicks and snares are detuned so they sound like they have been abused through too much practicing.

What about steel drums, where do they fit into the picture? Are they a sort of honourary member of the jamaica reggae outfit?

steel drums can be used as a percussive element and also a tonal element in your music. But dont try to recreate the suolja boy song with the steel drums cuz that was so 2007.

Good examples of steel drums would be from the soca tracks. I'm not really a soca person, but tune in to radio1's soca show
http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/alexjordan/ to get a good example of steel drums.

Steel pulse is the only steel drum reggae sound i like.

I'm sure there are some other obscure quirky percussion instruments going on in the back ground off marley tracks. Just don't know what they are. :?

I don't have cable or satellite, but perhaps I can track down the show. Where is VH1 aired? Do you know the name of the show or when it was on? I'm in Melbourne.
