loading vsts in Live

I just got live and my question is; is live supposed to automatically find my vsts or do I have to make my own custom vst folder for live to locate them, right now live won't automatically find my vsts. If I have to make my own folder how do I go about doing that, just dragging in all my vst apps in one folder? I tried to open some folders in live for vsts but it kept saying unable to open and that the folder needs to be writable.

It's all described in the manual, page 214 (pdf) or page 183 (printed).

preferences->file/folder->vst plugin custom folder->rtfm...
