Is Live fully compatible with Quad cores (PC)

Post by kupfer_m » Mon Oct 27, 2008 12:09 pm

Hi,

Did not really find an answer for this.
Live supports multicore but does this mean I
will benefit from using a Quadcore (a Q6600 or so) instead of a
Core 2 Duo (E8500) processor ?

Thanks,
Kupfer.

Yes it is. Live could utilize up to 8 cores. I've been using Q6600 based PC for a good while now, works just great.

I've been using a q6600 for a while, live uses all the cores fully.

Thanks,

Now should I go for the Q6600 or the newer Q8200 ?

Well, at least Q6600 is good value for money as it overclocks from the stock 2.4GHz to 3GHz with no effort. But CPU intensive stuff could probably benefit from the 1333MHz FSB of the Q8200, haven't really checked how much the processor actually cost.

I have had recent troubles with Q6600 and Asus P5Q Pro mother board. At this point in the trouble shooting process, this combination and an NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT video card and Live don't mix well. My problem was duplicated with other users and an 8400 series NVIDIA card, both with Live 6 and Live 7. The problems are isolated to Live, and not repeatable in other DAWS. Others have had very good success, I have not.

If everybody uses (or at least recommend) quadcores nowadays,
what is the use for dualcores then ?

to be half as powerfull ?!

should be a nobrainer if you compare dual/quad prices

Live runs like a charm on my 2.83 GHz Q9550 quad core :)

since you guys are on the quadcore topic, here is a question ... I notice on my Q6600 that live utilizes the various threads very well, and it runs up to 100% CPU usage on each core (OK, I have to really, really, really push it in order to get it to max out).

So far so good ... very happy.

However, when it comes to rendering, Live only uses a maximum of 25% of each core. Anyone know why this is???

OK for live it is not an issue at all ... typically songs or short movie projects render in a few minutes anyway.

However, I have the same issue with Adobe premier. During real time processing, it utilizes the maximum CPU power available from each core, but during a render, it only uses about 25% of my capacity. With premier it is an issue when it is taking 1 hour plus to render a large project.

Anyone notice this issue during rendering with live? I'm just curious if it is only me?

So with a QuadCore,
what do you guys think of this system (to replace my 1.7GHz Centrino laptop)

-ANTEC Sonata III 500W Black
-SAMSUNG SH-S223F/bebe Zwart S-ATA 22X DVD-RW
-CORSAIR Twinx DDR2 2048MB PC6400 XMS2 (2X1024MB)
-MSI N9400GT-MD512H 512MB PCI Express Nforce 9400GT
-SAMSUNG 320GB 16MB SATA300 7200RPM HD322HJ
-SAMSUNG 640GB 16MB SATA300 7200RPM HD642JJ
-GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DS3 Socket 775 Intel® P45
-LG W2234S-BN 22 Inch Wide LCD Screen
-INTEL Core 2 Quad Q8200 45NM 2.33 Socket 775
-SCYTHE Shuriken CPU Cooler

Thanks,
