The Not Enough Memory Issue

Post by sparklepuff » Sun May 10, 2009 1:51 pm

So, this has been plaguing me ever since upgrading to Live 8. I'm just curious, how much memory is NOT enough memory? This error is a bit of a mess, too, because it pops up when I TRY and save. It tells me to save, but it won't let me save. Fail.

At the time of purchase, these macbook pros could only use 3 gigs of RAM. I believe it's been fixed to be able to use 4, I'm going to stick that in to try and fix this. But really, 3 gigs of RAM is no longer sufficient?

My issue is, I've spent the last many hours warping tracks, and now I can't save!!! FUCK!!! What on Earth can I do to free up some memory for Live so that I can save this. Or do I just leave my Live set open FOREVER and hope it never crashes.

Its strange that 64 bit operating systems aernt supported due to the ram limitations of the 32 bit ones especially as Live 8 seems quite power hungry in comparison to 7

Hello,

Live can use 4GB RAM on OSX. I strongly suggest to add more RAM to this machine.

1) did you load any clips into RAM by using the RAM button?
-> if yes, disengage the RAM button for all audioclips.

2) try to freeze some tracks that contain devices which load their stuff into RAM, example: Simpler.

Does it work now?

ZERO clips are loaded into RAM.

There are ZERO instruments in this set. It is merely my DJ set, only audio clips. Nothing else.

So why is there no memory available?? What is eating up my memory? This does NOT happen in Live 7. Never has.

As a workaround til this gets sorted out, can you hit the Save button in Clip View, and at least save the .asd file for each clip manually? Then drag them into a new Set?

Hi,

2nd workaround: export each track into Live's browser and re-import all tracks into a new set.

I've had this same problem with live 8.0.1, not sure if it's still present in 8.0.2 because I haven't been able to test it with my usual workflow.

My workaround has been simply to force quit Live (cmd + alt + esc), then relaunching it, clicking 'Yes' when asked if I want to restore the set I was working on, then saving immediately.

Not really acceptable.... Software doesn't function as promised, would like to dicuss discount until it does!

Currently only acceptable workaround is to force quit Live and hope that when reopening enough of the live set is recovered from the undo history....

The force quit doesn't work for some reason, it doesn't ask if I want to recover my work. Only if Live crashes does it allow me to do that, so I guess I'll just keep firing up Kore 2 and let Live crash on me and start it up so I can save my work.

I'm getting the same thing but in Live 7.0.14 and 7.0.16,
my set crashed, went to reopen it and all i get now is the not enough memory problem. when i hit Okay ableton just freezes for a second then comes back and tells me there isn't enough memory again. i have to alt+control+delete it to get it to close.

I have 3gigs of memory and running Windows 7 beta

Hi,

@2neffoo

Sure, it should run depending on how much you load into RAM. Which OS are you using? How much RAM you've installed?

@staefn

Win 7 beta is not supported - sorry can't help you here.

to my knowledge i'm not running anything into ram. the ram button on the clips is deactivated. My OS is XP service pack 2. I have 2.0gb of ram installed.

@2neffoo

can you please send the set to our support address - if possible?

Is it possible to freeze some tracks?

Using more RAM on your system wouldn't harm. Add 2GB of RAM and use the 3Gb switch (XP PRO only) in order that Live can use more of your inserted RAM.
