Hello,

I recently purchased Ableton with an Akai MPK49 running on my new Macbook. But, I have been having some difficulty learning Ableton. This is my first time using it and my only prior experience with a sequencer is GarageBand but, as I have found out, using GarageBand doesn't mean I will know how to use Live.

I mean, I tried reading the manual but it isn't the most entry-level-friendly. I have been trying to discover videos and similar material covering the basics but there just isn't enough for Live 8! (I found that several books will be out at some point after the summer but who am i kidding? I can't wait THAT long!)

Luckily, I found that versions 6 and 7 seem to be similar enough so I am now looking for help vids and documents on those as well. Still, I figure, many if not most of you are quite familiar with the software and can point out some references, documents, web links or even give me your own tips and tricks to help me grasp this software.

In the meantime, I will continue my research and I hope to have produced my own music before the end of this year.

By the way, I am into trance, house, electronic, etc. type of music.

Hi, if you've already used 6 & 7, then I assume you've been through all of the built-in lessons to give you an overview of the basics, right? Plus there's a short overview there of what's new in 8. Though I took the time to read the printed 7 manual from start to finish, to be honest I learnt more by working on music - whether composition or jamming - and then looking up specific items in the PDF manual. Even better is working together with a more experienced user and asking them questions/watching how they do stuff - highly recommended.

Another nice resource are the two sticky posts at the top of the Tips & Tricks forum.

Edit: another great resource: http://www.vimeo.com/user730594

Thanks 80,

I've never actually used Ableton prior to purchasing version 8 but I will definitely be browsing through the Tips & Tricks section as well as check out your link.

Ok, in that case definitely do all of the built-in lessons - accessible through the help menu. Good place to start!

+1 ^^

I've been using Live for approximately 3 years and there are always times where I
go back to the built-in lessons in order to fully understand what the fuck I'm trying
to achieve.

Secondly.....this forum has been the most helpful tool for tips and trix.

RTFM, search the forum, and then make a dick of yourself!
I've had so many problems solved by asking nicely.

The rest I've had answered by "RTFM". Good advice.

Z.

Hey Rinsemeister,

Thanks, I will check out the manual again and see if this new period of time will make a difference. Maybe my tenacity will aid me in getting through it.
