Soundcard, High pitch sound then stops audio

Post by audiofeen » Thu Jul 15, 2010 2:26 pm

My soundcard/ ableton/ driver just drops out and then emits a high pitch burst for a second or 2 and then repeats it
it's a motu ultralite firewire mk3 this problem occours when playing audio in ableton sometimes it can go for a few hrs withoout happening and sometimes it can just drop out in less that 1 min,
I am of course running the latest drivers from motu, the latest updates on my mac and ableton, i have even tried the 8.1.5b version to see if it had any fix for me but no such luck not even 3 min into a tune and pop no sound and left half deaf for about 15 min again.

Macbook pro 2.16ghz
4gb ram
200gb 7,200rpm hdd
osx 10.5.8
ableton 8.1.3/ 8.1.4/8.1.5b
motu ultralite mk3
driver version 1.5 rel date(10.07.09)

with the updates from ableton version 8 has become more unstable not vise versa.

This is quite possibly related to this topic about cpu consumption as it usually drops out around then.

Hi,

- do you get better results when using the built in soundcard?
- do you have any devices connected to the Motu via digital connection? If yes,
try to disconnect them and see if that changes anything.

when i use the built i card i don't get the audio drop out,
no i don't have any digital devices connected to the card all i use it for is one of 3 output routings.
master out 1-2
analog out 1-8
headphone out

I don't even currently have any midi devices connected or even a firewire device dasiy chained through it.

I am currently re-installing my seytem to a dual boot 10.6/ 10.5 set up and see if i can use 10.6 without an issue.
the problem is this only happened a few times and would only usualy happen on startup so a restart of computer and power off and on the card or re-install of the driver would solve the issue.

the strange thing is i'm using the exact same ableton install of 8.1.3 and the same install disc of 10.5 the driver that i had installed
was exactly the same so i'm really at a loss as to where the problem is.

Hi,

if it works great with the built in card i assume that there is a problem with the
driver/connection of the Motu.

You could also try, if using an older Motu driver would work any better.
(Here, make sure to uninstall the installed driver properly)

In any case, please let me know if using 10.6 remedies the problem.

Did you switch off your ultralite before upgrading drivers?

Quit Live & all Motu applications (Motu Audio Setup, Motu CueMix etc.).

Do a factory reset of the ultralite.

Switch off the ultralite.

Run the uninstaller (within the installer of the drivers).

Install latest drivers: rel. date 2010/07/09 - MOTUFireWireAudio.kext 1.5 41560

Right well it looked all good for about 3 minutes then the standard high pitch burst and no audio again after it.
i tried different output routing and still no difference.

so why it was all working about 2 months ago and now it's not?
what has changed since then in the mac system...What am i supposed to do how to fix it?

i'm started a tech support link with motu but i'm really not holding my hopes up

For anyone else interested the topic this is from other motu ultralite users

ok so i just kept repeating the process until i have it so it looks like it worked (i hope im not speaking to soon)
this is what i did and looks good so far i'm going to leave it run for the next few hrs and see does it stop.

1.Factory reset on the Ultralite .

Once booted, press PARAM twice to cycle to the setup menu. Scroll clockwise until 'Factory Defaults' is displayed. Finally, press VALUE twice to confirm the reset wait until it reads meter 44 again.

2. then turn off the interface

3. delete these files

Go to Macintosh HD/Applications and trash, MOTU Audio Setup and CueMixFX Console.
Go to Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions and trash, MOTUFireWireAudio.kext
Go to Macintosh HD/Users/Library/Preferences/ and trash com.motu.FireWireAudio

4.Empty the trash

5.Restart

6.Download the current FireWire driver from Motu

7.Run the uninstall driver option from the installer.

8.Restart

9.install the driver

10.restart

11.then shut down and turn the card on as you boot

and good luck

Well it's just started to do it with my onboard soundcard to except audio just drops and only in ableton and is still working if i use quicktime, itunes ect..

Looks like i'll have to invest in some tin cans for my live set this sat, so i can bang on them when ableton/ mac os or what ever the bloddy problem is decides to have a hissy fit again :(

Note: the ultralite crashes more than ever now under 10.6.4..

Hi,

- delete all Live x.x.x folders which can be found here:
~ /User/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live x.x.x

Now start up Live and check if it works with the built in soundcard.
If thats fine, check with the Motu.

- if this didn't help, try if it works better under a new/fresh user account

that had no luck with the motu, still the same amount of spikes. i didn't bother with the on board card because then the apc 40 started playing up..
when i set up this time i made 2 partitions on the disc so i'm going to install 10.5 and combo update to 10.5.6 before all the java problems and see how things work.
I really don't care at this point what needs to be done i just need a system that works the way it should!

it was not functioning correctly the track mutes, and clip/ row button triggers weren't functioning.. in a track I was writing and then the devise
wasn't being seen in the midi options..
so I restarted the computer and after around 30'min the same thing started happening again..

I have reinstalled now to 10.5.6 and everything seems fine so far
even with the motu.. I have left the session running on a CPU Intensive looped section for the last few hours to see if the dropout occurs..
and looked good after an hour..
so I left it running while im out and will post back if the results..
is it possible that the apc 40's non functionality was caused by a max for live sequencer I had running in the session.
it wasn't a part of the session when I was having the issues as I had removed it and flattened the parts to audio.

Ok so had the session running for 5hrs non stop with the ultralite + 8.1.5b1 on 10.5.6
i'm going keep testing over the next few days because i really want to be sure but, in the session i had 16 tracks of audio with at least 1 audio effect on each track, 1 Schwarzonator sending midi to Kontakt 4 running a fairly heavy grand piano bank, 6 return channels with effects on each..
i kept it running at around 60% cpu for the whole time and no crash/ audio dropout so far.

This is the max 4 live step sequencer for the apc 40 i didn't even turn on the function for the apc in the session that i was using.

well all looks good just finished putting my live set together, no crashes no glitches no cpu spikes and no soundcard drop out... (yet) :)

The cpu load has decreased significantly since the downgrade but here's a list of the 3party plugs I am having serious bugs with on all versions of live from 8.1.3-8.1.5b2 ..

circle 1.0.7 au (cpu intensive and audio starts glitching and can cause audio dropouts and cpu spikes.)
analog factory 2.5 vsti (gets very glitchy and can cause crashes.)
voxengo elephant 3.4 vst( ause's audio drops and cpu spikes.)
korg analog collection vsti (glitchy and cpu spikes)
