sudden CPU spike.. please help

Post by vedder » Tue Aug 24, 2010 3:00 pm

My CPU generally sits around 40% on a fully finished track.. I watched a movie last night on my computer. When I came out this morning and fired up ableton, it was now hitting 170% CPU, with the same track opened.. I've tried reinstalling Ableton, but that didnt fix the problem. Please help. I'm not sure whats going on. Thank you.

I'm running an intel i7 930 processor with 6gb of ocz ram.

Hello,

Try to pinpoint the spike: disable VST´s (if used), check if you driver settings are ok.
Try to reboot your computer as well.

Best,
Christian

I disabled all of them and it barely shaved off any of the CPU. I also opened a track that had very little channels open and the CPU% was still way up at about 60% where normally with that track would be 5%.

I've reinstalled ableton twice as well as rebooted twice.. didnt fix...

I guess my only option is to reinstall my OS.. such a pain..

I'm actually encountering the exact same issue on several projects. I'm using a macbook 2.4 Ghz running on 10.5.8 and with a MOTU Ultralite MK3 the issue however remains using the built in soundcard too.
This is very frustrating, as I can't finish my projects and i have some music that is due very soon!
Bug reports have been sent already but no response yet...

so I had to re-install my OS and to make things even worse, when I opened my project all the audio channels no longer have the samples in them! I saved my samples folder but it doesnt save the samples once you rename them.. there goes all my projects from the past year...

Do you still get CPU spikes?

reinstalling OS is really a last resort, try using a larger audiobuffer for a start.

Everything is else is shut, no wifi, no other program running, same happens after a fresh rebooting and launching live directly...

I'm on Mac OS Snow Leopard and I suffered from the same symptoms with sudden CPU overload with no reason, and accidentally found out that I had HP scanner software installed and one of the components is "HP Shortcut Manager" which is always on in the background and makes the CPU go crazy!

You can look in the Activity Monitor how heavily it overloads the processor. So I killed that little bastard ) and it seems the glitches have gone! You can either disable it in the System Preferences >> HP Scanjet >> Disable shortcut buttons or you can delete these scripts completely
