Filter EQ help

Post by DJ Moonbass » Tue Dec 28, 2010 5:51 pm

hello ableton community. ive been producing music for about a year. im not released but i feel i am getting close to that point. i would be farther along with EDM production but i have always been limited to using the MIDI lab at my local college that only has protools and reason. well christmas came this year and it was very rewarding as it got me my own personal studio. im obviously using ableton... with an APC 40 and an MPK 49. i am saving for an apogee duo external audio interace and a small mixer. my computer is a new Macbook Pro with the i7 quad core.

i have been tinkering around with abelton alot and i have like one quesiton for now.

i made this very nice song and then i went back and added automated audio effects. i used basic beat repeat on som e of the tracks and the filter sweep from DJ master channel on the Master track. when i have this device on my master audio track sounds different. obviously it has EQ i know this. but i cant seem to EQ it like the original version. it sounds a little bit more muffled, the bass doesnt hit as hard and it sounds just a tad bit overdriven. and when i try and adjust the master channel it really doesnt do anything. it still sounds like its peaking to much. the master channel doesnt show red its like solid green but half way up the bars and they are not fluctuating very much when the song is at the climax. this is where i hear its peaking. seriously ive spent hours upon hours playing with it trying to figure it out for myself. ive done research and just cant seem to find what im looking for.

help me obi wan kenobi.... your my only hope. when i get home ill put the new version of the song on soundcloud and post them so you can hear exactly what its doing between the two and if needed ill make a video if that helps

thanks alot in advance for any help you can give me.

in the mean time here is the original version of the song its called Portland Nights:

Hi, could you clarify this a bit? It would help us to know specifically what the effects set up of your Master Track is. I assume when you say "filter sweep" that you're referring to Auto Filter? Do you have any other effects on the Track - dynamics, in particular? Perhaps you could post a screenshot.

Hi,

The DJ Master Channel Rack contains EQ3 with a 48dB/oct slope. Have you tried switching it to 24dB/oct for less coloring?

Also maybe try turning off the Saturator altogether, or turning the wet signal down and bringing the dry signal back a bit. A screenshot would be nice, I agree with David!

EQ3 is sort of known for coloring the sound, even when you're not actively boosting or cutting with it. I made a rack that uses EQ8 instead to function the same way, except that when you have all the gains set to 0, none of the audio is passing through the EQ, so it's much cleaner sounding. It's called EQ3.8, you can find it in this pack of effects:
