Live 8.2.6 Crashes on startup

Post by The Philosopher King » Wed Oct 05, 2011 8:11 am

I'll click on the Ableton Shortcut.
It can crash anywhere between 3-5 times before opening a new Live set.

I thrashed my Preferences.cfg recently. I think that helped a bit for a bit but it didn't cure anything.

I'm curious to know if there could be any obvious reason for these Crashes. Maybe someone else has had a similar experience.

The thing is, Ableton does eventually load with repeated attempts.

Thanks

EDIT:

I wonder if it could be RAM related. My RAM is fine, I tested it recently. I've restarted my Laptop now and Ableton loaded without a crash.

EDIT:

Five more crashes on startup after working with some files on my Laptop. I wonder how I can examine Ableton Crash report Packs for myself.

I have the same problems on my new mac book pro with Live 8.2.5 and 8.2.6. I try to open it and it hangs itself. It can take up to an hour before I get it started. Live itself produces no crash reports, but the system does. Can anyone read them? I could upload it somewhere, posting here doesn't work cause it´s too long.

15" MBP
Prozessor 2,2 GHz Intel Core i7
Speicher 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Grafiken Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 (11B26)

HDs are tested & the rights are repaired/ok. No software updates found by the tool, so all should be up to date, also the Ableton. It´s no difference if my Motu is connected or not.

What machine and system do you have?

I'm using Windows 7. ADMIN rights. UAC turned off etc.
Sony VAIO i3, 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM.
Live 8.2.6

Sound-cards: Various. Doesn't seem to make much difference. My Toneport UX1 is the most stable with Ableton. I've put away my brand new Roland Quad-Capture for the time being because I was getting even more crashes with Ableton. I use ASIO4ALL with my Laptop Sound-card sometimes.

Also getting crashes when shutting down a perfectly 'working' set etc.

I had the same problem, I was getting the endless beach ball on OSX 10.7.1 right after I authorized online every time I launched Live. It ended up being some kind of internet feedback loop during the authorization process caused by Safari remembering the authorization page and Live kept trying to launch the authorization window each time. If you're on OSX Lion and unlocked Live recently, make sure to close all open windows in Safari and do a restart. Even clearing the internet cache or reset Safari as an extra precaution might help. Those things fixed it for me.

I tell you - how I hate that crappy beachball. Everytime I see it I feel Angst!
In my case it´s no matter of Safari or being online I think, most time I have no connection, also airport turned off, no other things running or open. When I re-open Live sometimes it asks to "restore the windows", but yes or no, it makes no difference, Live directly hangs - beachball. The funny thing is: the system generates crash reports but Live doesn´t show the bug-window when sucessfully re-opened.

Well I did think about contacting support (again) but decided not to on this occasion ...

Yes, let us know what they say. In my case they didn´t help much until now but let´s see. If there´s something new, I´ll post it!

Here's something I just tried.

Usually, Ableton crashes on start-up (see above).

Just now, I unplugged my sound-card first, and then started Ableton. Guess what? No crash.

Maybe worth a try if you've run out of ideas.

In my case it doesn´t matter if the Soundcard is connected or not or connected and switched on. It happens anyway, so it doesn´t have to do something with the card or the Motu drivers. When Live is running after one million tries it runs stable. It´s just the startup process. And it´s only Ableton, no problems with other programs I tried.

Well, I seem to be making some progress.

Disconnecting the sound-card did help in my situation, which got me thinking.

Ableton V Sound-Card.

I changed my sound-card usb port and Ableton started ok this time with my quad-capture plugged in.

I'm wary of getting 'too' excited about this but so far, touch wood, it's an improvement.

EDIT:

Worked a few times. Now it's back to the same old sh*t again!

same problems on 8.2.6 and 8.2.5 - crashing all the time...

ive gone back to 8.2.2 which is more stable but not without its problems... (doesnt crash as much)

Ableton is the most unstable DAW, thats for sure
