How to play video from Session view (almost there...)

Post by Nilzie » Tue Jan 24, 2012 9:45 pm

Lately I've been trying to find a way to play video from inside Session view. Today I found a workaround, that I wanted to share with you. In the process, I'm also hoping that somebody can help me nail down the reason to why this isn't working 100%...

WHAT I WANT TO DO:

I have 40 minutes or so of video in my Arrange, divided in a bunch of songs. During my gigs, I need to jump from one song/video to another by pressing buttons on my foot controller.

SOLUTION:

1 - I create a locator in the Arrange view for each point in the timeline that I would like to be able to jump to.
2 - I create midi clips that corresponds to each locator. Every midi clip contains a different midi note that I assign to the different locators.
3 - To get this to work I have to create a midi track that sends to the IAC bus 1 (prefs/Midi sync/Track/Output/IAC bus 1/Track/On, and prefs/Midi sync/Track/Input/IAC bus 1/Remote/On

This way I could also move to the different positions in the timeline just by playing the different midi notes on a keyboard. But I have to have my hands free to do other stuff, and can't remember some 40 different positions and which note that corresponds to which position... So I do this:

4 - I move the midi clips from Arrange view to session view, and arrange them vertically on my midi track.
5 - With two buttons on my foot controller I can manage to move up/down between the scenes in my Session view, and I can use a third button to launch them.
6 - Voila! Almost working. I succeed to jump between different positions in my timeline from inside Session view.
7 - When I launch some of the clips, the "Back to Arrangement"-button lights up and causes some kind of feedback (and the video to freeze). The midi track stays lit, and keeps sending midi. A solution to this is to write in another midi note in all of the clips, which triggers the "Back to Arrangement"-button (and stops the momentary freeze caused by the "Back to Arrangement"-button lighting up).

PROBLEM:

For some reason, sometimes when I launch a scene or clip, Live skips a beat, or an 8th note. Which I don't want happening when performing... This seems to happen regardless of whatever quantization or grid I'm using.

Does anyone have any ideas on where this problem could come from? Or have any other solution on how to play video from Live's Session view? I tried JAM, real nice software. But would prefer to try to solve this problem inside Live, if possible.

Any VST or AU plugin where I could make a list of Midi notes, that could be triggered from one single button (such as Live's Session view) would do the trick, I guess... Then I could stay in my Arrange view. But I can't seem to find anything like that.

I would veeery much appreciate any help or input on this!

i didn't thought of this....
just curious, you drop the video on another screen and playing along with your performance ?
I ask, because i spent a week making a max/jitter patch doing this. Well, now, i am happy with it.
Maybe you can put the video in RAM ? how heavy is it ?

Just made a test. I also got a lag when triggering locators. Even with the movie loaded in RAM.
I can share my max patch if you want.

Nilzie this sound like a lot of hassle.

You could always download JAM 2.5 an automatic video application that allows you to playback videos intuitively and natively within Ableton Live's session view just how you would expect it to work with looping, clip position etc.

No need for Max4Live, no need for MIDI feedback, just a 30 sec installation.

You can download the demo at http://www.facebook.com/justaddmusicmedia

Heres a link to a quick a/v set i made with JAM2

@chapelier fou - I think maybe these problems comes up simply because Live isn't really made to use Session and Arrange views simultaneously... Thanks for giving it a try! I would love to try your max patch! I'll pm you my email address. How do you put your video material in the patch? And can you also play the sound from the videos? Eager to try :-)

@itsthejayj - I tried two of your versions of the JAM software out last week. Real nice piece of work. Had a few problems though, it got stuck loading my midi files for example. I will definitely consider buying the app when it's totally stable.

ok here is the patch.
space bar triggers play/stop.
esc makes it fullscreen
you can scrub in the video, then hit letter "a" at the right time. Then copy the value in one of the "time xxxx" box on the top.
tell me if you need help, but i hope you know max a bit cause my patch is messy.

Monsieur Fou - I ran into a cold a few days ago and have been forced to take a break from programming... Will play tonight with my old setup - Ableton+Resolume. But will try your patch next week when I have some more time!

Got all the midi stuff working in the latest version of JAM2 especially for you bud ;). Its quite a nice feature for projection mapping . http://vimeo.com/35798797. Anyway hope you found a solution one way or another, and your feeling better.
