Here is the plot:

if i do the latency lecon with latency compensation, i get zero latency while recording directly from out to input.

if i do it in an empty set, i get 15 ms, my in and out latency are both 7.2 with a 256buffer settings, which leads to 29ms overall latency.
but then if i enable the latency compensation and record something from the input like a hardware synth, i still get the latency and i have to manually move the cursor at the begining of the sample.
If i set the latency of 29ms in the latency case in the low part on the recording track, i miss a part of the recording.
Manually i found that i need to set it to 20ms to get a correct recording with no latency when off course latency compensation is enable otherwise it does not change anything.

So basically what's wrong here, am i missing something or is it a bug?

Hello Krikor,

How are you monitoring the sound while you are recording? If the monitoring in Live, leaving the "Monitoring" button to "IN", Live obviously can't compensate the latency, as it can't look into the future to see what will come.

Try to describe what you did/do and we'll if anything is wrong.

So it's not a matter of monitoring actually its more the fact that the application does not offset the recording afterwards, i know that ableton can't predict off course, what it does is offset the overall output so the input sounds synchro, when it is small timing it's allmost imperceptible (right?), but shouldn't it do it automaticaly, without the need to enter it manually in the tracks on external input record mode.

So here is what i do:

-i open the lesson on latency compesation, it appears i don't get any latency when i do the test, with or withour automatic compensation on.

-i follow everything to settle the latency compensation in a clean set: i get 15ms of latency.
i enter this number in the preference panel. it is added to my sound card latency itself, i get the number 29ms on the overall.
when i keep on doing the test after entering the number, i still get an offset on recording, with or without latency compensation.
If i manually offset the input where i record while latency compesation is on then it is fine, my recording get offset the right way. If off course LC is off then the recording remains with the 15ms delay which seemt normal to me.

I notice that if i offset the input of the track i'm recording on to get it to to be on right timing while using plugins (like Mtronic drummachines), the track with plugings get offset and are then out off synhro.

So mainly, my questions are:
why is the lesson about latency showing no latency at all?
Why the audio does not get offset automaticaly right when latency is settled in the prefs?
Is the latency compensation only a monitoring issue? (it does not automticaly move the audio if you don't tell it so)
Why the fact of offseting an audio track for input, messes up the latency compensation of track with pluggins.

You need to explain in detail what you are doing & how you are measuring latency.Stating you are following the lesson does not make it clear you are doing things correctly so explain each step.

Are you sending your test audio out from a physical output & wiring that back into a input to record in live?
All sound cards have latency so it sounds like you are not doing that.

Are you just resampling within live because that would show no latency.

You Must send the test sound physically out of & back in to the sound card.

Are you aware that you can set latency in preferences to a negative value?

off course i send the test from physical output to physical input!!!
the latency in preference is here to inform the application of the effective latency of the system.
setting negative values won't help as it would increase the latency.

Any info regarding this?
i have a friend that encounter the same thing, so it seems it's a normal behavior, which is obsiouvly very weird, am i on crack or what? someone? ableton?
