Clicks and pops - why ?

Post by wildcon » Mon Apr 19, 2004 9:46 am

I have imported some wave files of songs into live for a dj set.

I am getting clicks and pops at certain points (alway's the same) in the song.

I have checked the wave files in cubase and they are fine and click free.

The clicks therefore are being generated within the 'live' program.

Does anyone have any idea's ??

This is very annoying.

Cheers

Hi Dub,

I'm using -

Dell Desktop
Pentium P4 2 Gig
1 gig Ram
Terratec DMX6 Fire soundcard.

Latency is currently set at 23ms.

The latency is quite high and I would be reluctant to set it much
higher as I will get 'delay' problems when recording.

I noticed last night that I also seemed to get crackles when making automation adjustments.

I have loaded all the files into cubase SX2 in the same running order with automated fades to reproduce as near as possible the live 'set' and it is absolutely clear.

I think I can only adjust the latency directly from the ASIO panel of the soundcard, which would then change it for Cubase as well, but I'll give it a try and see if it solves the problem.

Cheers

shot in the dark here, but what is your graphics card situation--does it share memory, or have its own. Has increasing the latency helped out at all? DO you have the latest drivers for your soundcard? Have you tuned your computer for music using tips like those at www.musicxp.net and www.blackviiper.com? It seems like your machine should be capable of lower latencies with no probs, trying to help troubleshoot what is happening.

All good advice.

However, i have spent considerable time optimising my system for music and implemented the majority of the changes recommended on musicxp.net. Yes the soundcard has it's own IRQ.

This is why I'm stumped as to why this hould happen only in 'Live' and assumed there was a setting within the program that could be changed.

I'll play around with the latency settings tonight and see what happens.

Cheers

Okay - Problem solved.

Bizzarely it was not a latency or system issue at all.

I noticed that the clicks stopped or were in a different place when
I moved the track around. The noise was in fact caused by the end of the
previous track that was overlapping.

At the very end (silence) of all the imported tracks there is a noticable click or pop.

I checked back with the original files (I had cut of the silence at the end of the tracks in the cubase arrangement) that had been pulled into cubase and there it was at the end of every track. The clicks when automating are probably the same thing as they would be at the end/start of tracks.

Right - off to the cubase forum.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.
