Feedback problem, firewire is the devil?

Post by yanquiuxo » Thu Jul 31, 2008 10:14 pm

Ever since I got my Edirol FA66 http://www.turnkey.co.uk/mediaLibrary/i ... /11877.jpg I have sometimes had a problem with it. Listen to this sample and you might understand: http://guitarmy.se/rundgang.wav

What do you think might be casuing this feedback problem? Heard something about that ferritlocks on the firewire cable might help?

If your guess is correct, and Firewire IS actually the Dark Prince reincarnated, I'm afraid there's not much you can do.

I've used the FA-66 with no probs, I'd say if Firewire was the cause it'd be more likely failing at the PC, do you know what Firewire chipset it uses?

edit - just noticed you have the Macbook, that should have the Agere chipset which is good. Maybe try swapping your FA-66 for another of the same unit to try out?

wtf? ferritlocks in the cable... what is that some sort of small animal that scavenges on bytes of data? ;)

if you're feeling paranoid change the cable, but i would suggest it's more likely that it's a driver / os setup, or u have got a mic / line in which is feeding back...

I did buy a new cable a week ago because is lost the other one, still the same thing.

Tried to mute all the mic/ins to my computer as well. Does anyone know a good program for monitoring ins/outs for osx btw?

I found this manual on Edirols own homepage: http://www.guitarmy.se/FA-66_leaf_je2.pdf
"If you use a 6-pin ↔ 6-pin FireWire (IEEE 1394) cable to connect the FA-66 to
your computer, you must attach the included ferrite core.
This is for the purpose of preventing electromagnetic noise; do not remove it. "

OSX only uses Coreaudio to connect with the firewire soundcard and there are no drivers for either the FA66 or Coreaudio for OSX.

Well, Live is a good place to monitor ins / outs! go to live prefs and enable / disable the required channels. then goto ur set and configure the channels to receive / send out of the channels u just configured in the prefs... test to see if u get feedback!

Coreaudio is the audio driver for osx, to setup inputs / outputs goto applications/utilities and load "audio MIDI setup". You can also set preferences via the System Preferences / Sound. But u dont really need to configure this unless u want to route system sounds out of another outlet, or setup multi-channel playback...

if u rule out all possibilities and it's still feeding back, then u should exchange ur card as it could be faulty.
