Ideas for missing MIDI and piano roll workflow features

Post by kemijo » Thu Feb 21, 2019 11:37 pm

The things I miss from Logic and lust for from FL Studio are mostly midi workflow features.

Modernize the piano roll: Similar to how the cmd-click-drag line in the Ableton velocity pane changes note velocities on an angle. How about something like that on midi event notes? Strums, note event cutting/splitting, macros for pattern creation and editing, interactive graphical arpeggiation (like what you are doing with automation curves in 10.1). Persistent warp markers for midi notes. Chord recognition, note snapping, built in transposition and inversion - per chord, not per clip (perhaps using note groups). Some features of Cthulu/Scaler/Captain Chords/etc should be built in the piano roll. A brush that lets you change or randomize note positions, lengths, velocities (like Photoshop). Groove clips for adjusting or humanizing timing are not as useful or interactive as a tool in piano roll would be. I'm not a player so I spend most of time in the piano roll editing. This could be more sophisticated and in other software it is. FL is light years ahead in this regard, with features I would expect in Ableton.

Midi clip loop and clone (Arrangement View): Clip loop in arrangement is limited, and it switches off when you consolidate. Anytime I make a change other than event position, I need to re-consolidate, reactivate loop (on my other screen) and drag out the clip again. Logic has a "clone" clip feature where clips retain their links to each other. A change in one changes them all. Clones don't need to be adjacent; they can be placed anywhere, on the same track or a different one. Even better would be a master-slave option on clones...changes in the slave do not change the master but the offsets from the master are maintained. Great for transposition or harmonizing on separate tracks.

Multiple midi clip editing: Since v10 I can see midi notes in multiple clips but the 'non-active' ones are greyed out. To edit those notes, I need to click to 'activate' that clip before I can edit the notes. It's better than nothing but not much faster than just selecting the clip itself. Why is this intermediary 'activate' click needed? If more than one clip is selected, then I want to edit more than one at the same time. Please allow selecting/editing multiple midi events in multiple clips at the same time.

I'm sure many of these have been brought up many times over the years but we still don't have them :P Thanks for listening, please consider!
