Audio vs Midiclips: Why is there a difference in handling?

Post by serotoninsteve » Thu Sep 02, 2004 2:03 pm

I compare midiclips with audioclips.

Midiclips:

-notes : I can adjust my grid using the options dropdown menu or ctrl+1,2,3,4 and set it to what I need. As ex. set to 1/4th and draw 1/4 notes, the loop start, end and offset points snap to 1/4th grid measure! Logical!

-envelopes: The same if I switch to envelopes mode, I can draw my envelopes with a 1/4th bar precision! Logical!

Audioclips:

-notes : I can only adjust snap to 16th or snap to nothing using the dropdown menu or ctrl+4, ctrl+1,2,3 are greyed out! Impossible to adjust to an other value as 16th, but not everybody wants that everything snaps to 1/16! Absolutely unlogical!!!!

-envelopes: Here the logic comes back, everything snaps to what you adjust! Logical!

Another thing: If you can adjust the grid values by simple shortcuts like ctr+1,2,3,4 from 512/1 to 1/16384th grid values, why not let you change them to what you need, unaffected by your zoom level, means that sometimes I have zoomed out a long track and can´t adjust a value of as ex. 1/1 or 1/2, but only a 4/1 value.

In older versions the snap to grid was adjusted by the value of the global quantization, now that we can adjust the snap to grid for clips separately, but sorry why for midiclips and envelopes only?

I love Live, and almost every function works the same logical way in this app, but aren´t audioclips worth the same as midiclips?

I would read some other opinions on this here.

Greetings

Steve

It does sound like more flexible snapping is required for audio.

But I really don't like the "ctrl+1,2,3,4" mehod of choosing the grid in Live 4. I tend to do everything with the mouse, rather than using keyboard shortcuts, and this seems to be the one thing (that I need to do) which I cannot do with the mouse. I don't think it's even on the menus. I'd like to be able to click where the grid size is displayed to change it (like I can with global quantise).

Thanx for your reply, yes I understand what you mean.

The 4 commands in the options menu would be better near the clip view if you want to change with your mouse, same for the pencil tool.

Serotonin,

OMIGOD!!! I just discovered something!!! I was about to post with full concurrence with your opinion until I tested out something. What I discovered is that if you zoom all of the way in and hit ctrl+1 you will get a successively smaller quantization grid (MIDI). This rocks actually. It's probably in the manual, but like many of you, I just tore into 4 without really pouring over it. As for why you can't do this with an audio clip. You got me

Yes, adjustable for midiclips and envelopes only, but not for audioclips!
That´s what I meant.
And please make the quantization not affected by the zooming level, or at least give us the option to separate this!

Greetings!
