Why don't you just use Logic then? I'm seriously considering grabbing a copy of it myself.
I use Logic all the time for my film scores - 90 percent of what I do. Unfortunately everyone in my band uses Live and that's the platform we work under as a group. Unless they get Logic we have to be able to send projects to eachother so that's unfortunately not an option for now... For any of my own work I don't really bother with Live anymore.

More hopes for the future...

A Project Template file format

Import / Save channel strips - Yes you can browse a project and import any track by clicking on it, but you Can't import return and master tracks - at least the ability to import returns and masters.

1. Audio routing templates.

I have several Motu sound cards, and sometimes I just plug in a set of headphones to play with live as I don't feel like opening a flight case or heading to my studio and plugging in my computer to all of the gear. Making music is fun, some times you just sort of want to break out from the various routines we fall into, and just make a track because it's fun and we are in the mood...

Yet, all of a sudden I realize my default template requires 10 audio outs (4 stereo tracks setup via a matrix mixer so any of my tracks can go anywhere) and (1 stereo effect return)... so now I have to reroute a bunch of crap then I get to start whatever audio alchemy is about to ensue. Can't I just select a different "audio template" or something like that? I.E. If I'm at my studio, can't I just get certain busses and sends which automatically route a certain way? If I'm using my travel rig and I plugin to that can't it automatically know how I want that piped up to my mixer? If I just plugin a set of headphones to my laptops audio output can't it just let me tell it that's what I want ableton live to do and act accordingly?
+1 on this, and midi templates as well, FTW!
Global preferences templates...

Grooves should be able to process incoming notes in real time. It would be good if you could select a groove for the channel in the input/output section or something, not just individual clips.

The midi arpeggiator should be able to select a groove as a pattern for rhythm, velocity, note length/gate time and so on.

Also for the arpeggiator, this should have the option to modulate its velocity output by aftertouch, or somehow make it work like the 'note repeat' on Akai devices, where the repeated notes come out softer or harder depending on the pressure you're applying to the pads you're holding down. This really good for dynamic drumrolls, stuttering chords and melodies etc.

Aftertouch, modwheel, and pitchwheel should be assignable to anything via the MIDI assign function, just like our knobs, buttons and keys. So for instance you could hold down your chord, and then increase the pressure on the keys to make the volume fader on channel 5 go up or something.

For midi editing, the grid in the piano roll should adapt to swing values, every kind of tuplets (not just triplets), and, agian, to grooves!

Analog; have the option to turn note retriggering off. And to copy parameter values from the other amp, filter, lfo etc by right clicking, just like in Operator.

I saw somone write about getting parallel MIDI note editors for different instruments to ease the task of harmonizing.

This is also really good for drum notation and editing. We need multiple MIDI velocity editors available, in parallel, one lane for each drum. I think this is pretty standard in a lot of dedicated drum editors? So there should be plenty of devices to get inspired by. Something like Logics Hyper Editor would be absolutely amazing.

All of these have been mentioned in the past, but fwiw:

-import MIDI and key mappings from an existing project
-import return and master tracks from an existing project
-route both MIDI and audio into an M4L patch in the style of side-chaining in Live's native devices. Ditto for routing MIDI and audio out of an M4L patch.

-Sampler's filters available in auto-filter
-Sampler's adjustable filter envelope curves available in Operator, Analog, etc.
-Simpler's dynamic start and loop point controls available in Sampler

-Ability to highlight a collection of audio clips and replace (hot-swap) the files that those clips refer to (as opposed to replacing an audio file everywhere it occurs in a set).

-Support for managing multiple takes and comping

-A few MIDI editing operations along the lines of Logic, e.g., force legato, replace sustain by note duration, select all muted events, invert selection (select all notes that are currently not selected and unselect those that are selected), etc.

-Ability to turn off the recording of automation when global RECORD is armed.

"INSERT CAPTURED SCENE" but keep the original clips playing?
  • it could be done with a modifier like (ALT)ctrl-shift-i
  • it would create a new scene
  • but the original clips would still be playing

"INSERT CAPTURED SCENE" but keep the original clips playing?

like if i have 5 or 6 variations of a clip on the same track.

I get some ideas together and jam them, and want to create scenes 'below' these, but when i create captured scenes it automatically switches to these new scenes and i loose my bearings on the clips i was jamming.

It would be nice to "INSERT CAPTURED SCENE" but keep the original clips playing not start the new scene.

it could be done with a modifier like (ALT)ctrl-shift-i

Customizable Metering.
This may seem like a trivial feature to some but for me it would be paramount and here is why.

I use outboard gear with Ableton. When tracking I track with the analogue environment in mind. This means a target signal level of around 0db VU which = -20db FS. I do this so that I am not constantly inserting utility plugins all over the place to adjust gain for using outboard gear, outboard gear is designed with this level signal in mind. I also do it to allow an appropriate amount of headroom for my mixes.

So my specific request is that the user be able to change the meter range and also toggle between Peak value and RMS. This way if I wanted to rescale my meter so that -10db RMS was at the top of my meter I could. The number readout for the peak value of the channel would still display the peak value of the signal and would light up when 0dbfs is exceded in other words its behavior would be the same as it is currently.

Also please dispense with the super tiny level meters in arrange view and just show the signal value as a number. Again, selectable between Peak and RMS and light the box when 0dbfs is exceded to indicate clipping.

I really can't stress how paramount this would be for workflow. Otherwise, I love the program and find it to be a very inspiring environment to work in.

cheers,
Joshua

recipe window!!

i think that there should be a window on the lower left that flashes recipes. there should be sub categories of course like:

drinks
desserts
soups
meats
veggies

there can be sub groups, but this is such an awesome feature request that further breakdown should wait for Live 10. I'm so excited! Once I found out that by typing in this thread you can get what you want in Live 9, i didn't know what to do. there are so many new features to ask for, check book balancing, single button mastering, mail order marijuana, world peace... just to name a few! still, i think the recipe window has something for everyone! i mean we all eat right? and besides, the rest of those ideas stand about as much of a chance of getting implemented as this thread does of actually being read from beginning to end by anyone who will actually be changing anything in Live 9.

Gold Award for that innovative FR, but I would be happy with a daily mixed drink recipe w/ picture included.

Audio loop whose end brace wouldn't have to be the same as play end.

I should be able to play a file to its end marker – even if it's not inside the set loop area – and only then have it jump to a loop area.

That reminds me about the cue start vs loop start when tweaking around the clip timeline. It has a mind of it's own wayyy too much.
