Increase video support

Post by downfader » Mon Feb 27, 2017 10:22 pm

I updated my OS a little while back with a new PC. Most of my old video software isn't quite compatible so it would be cool if I could use Live. Using video software on its own loses the ability to snap to clips and keep video in time with the music.

I think there is so much Ableton could do with video, especially within the live show/gigging perspective. Why rely on third party add-ons for video sync, doing it in Live would be awesome. You could also use video like you use sound, select video clips to create a mood. Time stretch or manipulate the video for atmosphere.

IIRC Live currently uses just one format of video. This is a bit of a shame as various cameras use different formats like full HD mp4 these days.

I agree that MP4 would be a natural container to support. Apple has been a major proponent for it and have stopped updating Quicktime for Windows.

Even if you're using iTunes in Windows you don't actually need Quicktime to be able to play back video content. It's important to note that just as MP4, MOV is merely a container. Instead of relying on Quicktime for cross platform codec support, Ableton need to rely on OS features. That would probably drop support for Windows versions before 10 and wouldn't be popular I believe.

That said, however, my issue I have with your suggestion is that I feel Ableton has much more work to do on remaining a great DAW. We can all dream and hope as well as make suggestions to Ableton. There's nothing wrong with that. It's my belief, however, it makes more sense dropping video support all together and rely on real time sync with video applications instead.

I'm focusing my interest on Max Video tools myself, but I don't know where that will lead exactly. And for final videos there are great video editing tools out there, some of them being free.

I would enjoy so much Ableton Live provides a proper video engine, just like reaper.

With a comprehensive compatibility to a wide range of medias.

I don't get why this is not already the case.
