Probably a redundant question by now; if Live 9 isn't 64bit I'll eat my hat.

Actually I'll eat all my hats.

And my friend, Steve "Mr Hat" Woolmore's as well.

That's a lot of hats I stand to eat if the Abes let me down!

For my solution see the setup in my Signature. Im using Vienna Ensemble Pro on the PC. The Modded MacBook Pro is my sequencer and mixing machine, while the PC is a Node/Sound Module. This allows me to use my FAVORITE program (Ableton Live), without the RAM limitation (Vienna will Host Play, Omnisphere, and others). The Mac has the same libraries installed for when I am mobile. Then I simply copy the midi to the node tracks when I am back in the studio.

A potential work-around until everything goes 64 bit is something like jBridge (see for example http://andrewlandry.com/2010/12/the-move-to-64-bit/) which can allow 64 bit plugs to work with a 32 bit host (like Ableton) or use your old 32 bit plugs in a 64 bit host like Cubase. Not ideal and could be buggy, but a potential “bridge” until everyone goes 64 bit. Anyone with experience using jBridge?
Yup I am. It's the only seamless solution I've found and works well but it is not 100% stable. It's stable enough to use in the studio but not live, and I recommend on using it on as few plugins as possible - ie your monster plugins like drum samplers. Takes some time to get it working well with your plugins but once you have it definitely removes the 32 bit limit for third party vsts. It also improves CPU performance significantly, ie jbridge uses CPU better than live in multicore systems. Give it a shot. I'd recommend adding it to one plug in at a time - I went the other way , got too excited and added it to everything. The developer is a great guy and will help you getting your plugins working with jbridge. PC only but mac version is being worked on.

Just installed Vienna Ensemble Pro and I can see already that I’m likely to continue using Vienna as a VST plug-in even if Ableton Live goes 64 bit. I installed Vienna Ensemble Pro on a T61P Lenovo ThinkPad running Windows 7 64-bit and 4 GB RAM. Even with only 4 GB RAM, my 64-bit plug-ins load MANY more samples into memory than their 32-bit versions. I can run BOTH 32-bit plug-ins and 64-bit plug-in at the same time. Plus (unlike ReWire plug-ins such as Reason), I can shut Ableton down without being nagged to shut down my Vienna Ensemble Pro because it is a VST plug-in (not ReWire). This means that I can set up any number of Vienna Pro sessions that will continue to run even when Ableton is shut down. I can then open a new session of Ableton Live and re-connect the Vienna session(s) that are already running without having to reload my instruments and samples (which can take a long time for large sample libraries). So for me, Vienna Ensemble Pro has made using a 32-bit host (like Live, ProTools, Record, Digital Performer, etc.) a non-issue for now.

If Live isn't 64 bit... well, it simply has to be... simple has to be. I'm working on a project now that has crashed over 10 times in the last day or two... Every crash is an 'out of memory' crash. Been sending the reports in... I need this Ableton. Don't wanna have to go back to Logic...

Agreed. I think that Ensemble Pro is likely to quickly become a standard for anyone using large sample libraries or needs to offload CPU intensive instruments and effects to multiple computers.

WARNING!: Ableton Live not compatible with Reason 6

Post by MIDIpanic » Tue Jul 12, 2011 11:57 am

Another huge problem for me now is that Reason 6 won’t be compatible with Ableton. From Properrehead’s FAQ’s:

Is ReWire going to be 64-bit too?
Just as Reason 6 and Reason Essentials, ReWire will be 64-bit too. Note that 64-bit ReWire needs to be implemented in both the slave application (Reason 6, Reason Essentials) and your host. Please contact the manufacturer of your ReWire host of choice for compatibility information.

I use Reason in most of my current projects. So I have two choices: Abandon Ableton or not upgrade my Reason software.
This lack of 64-bit support by hosts like Ableton is becoming a huge problem!
