Its annoying that you can't just rename the ports in Ableton preferences, like you can with audio interface.... But on OSX, you can do the following, once you've set up your midi studio in "Audio Midi Setup":

Close Ableton and audio midi setup.

In finder:
  • menu bar > Go
  • Hold down option and click Library (option un-hides library in the menu)
  • Audio > midi configurations (this is where your midi configurations are saved)
  • Make a copy of the configuration you want to rename the ports for, eg, Default.mcfg, and store it somewhere else so you can roll back if there's a problem.
  • Open the mcfg file in textedit
  • You'll find your midi interfaces ports are listed somewhere in this format: <string>Port 01</string>
  • Change "Port 01" to whatever you want to rename your port to.
  • Save, and then re-open audio midi setup, and your interface ports should be reflected in there. This should also flow through to Ableton, as well.

+1 here

It's a very simply option, like the "arm on select track". Why these developers wanna make a so closed app? and can't implement real useful options?
