Studio One is leaving Ableton in the dust.

Post by gorillaknuckles » Fri Jan 20, 2012 6:36 pm

Come on guys, I love Ableton. I've been using it for years...

But now this sexy looking Studio One has walked into the room, and I have to say you are looking kinda dusty these days.

When is the last time you've given us a serious update? Where is the 64 bit support? (god this hurts, I crash all the time with big projects) Why is the interface not improving? (folders, comping, why can't I just drag the playhead if I want to?) And the list goes on...

Seriously, wtf is up? Namm came and went with nothing but a pale fart... Where are you guys? You used to rock the DAW.

I'm really on the fence right now, I'm already checking out the demo. This could be the end of something great. How sad.

And now Bitwig is waiting in the wings. What happened Ableton? You used to be so nimble... I hope you don't go dinosaur, but it feels like you are on the verge. 9 Better come soon and blow the doors off shit or you're gonna see people jumping ship (yours truly included).

Yeah, Studio One is great with Melodyne integration. I can record a melody on my phone with my voice, send it to Soundcloud, import the file into a Studio One project, analyze it using Melodyne and create a midi part from it...

Read that again if you need to...

I can sing my entire arrangement if I want to.

That is sick.

Watched the demo today at NAMM.

Ran into the Bitwig guys on the show floor today as well.

Live's days are numbered for me.

Sad but true.

I read it again. Then I shit my pants. I need to dig into that and all the other sexy looking features that soft touts.

Sorry Ableton, its looking like we might be heading into breakup time.

Actually why am I apologizing? You're the one who let me down.

btw, what is up with Bitwig? Even their logo looks Ableton inspired. Are they a clan of ex-abletoners who figure they can do it better?

I have to say that I feel the same way. I always tried to promote your product as much as possible but it's getting harder with the steep competition of other DAW's.
It seems like you guys are not very active at the moment. Either you are working so hard on something that you don't have time to make small updates. Or you are just lazy :P

C'mon guys, what's going on?!?!?!

Agree completely. I was an Ableton evangelist for a long time.

And I also wonder with you, what on earth are they up to?

Perhaps all this grumbling will be put aside when they knock the shit out of us with a stellar update... but I am seriously doubting that now..

Here's a new feature request: webcam in the Ableton offices so we can see what the hell is going on over there. My guess? Hookahs, giant plasmas and COD deathmatch.

In general I am still super happy with Ableton. It does things that no other DAW can do easily (for me). Maybe Bitwig will blow it away, but they haven't even started beta testing, and I am making music today.

I know everyone has different needs, but I just really wish they'd do only a handful of things better:
True odd time-signature support for tap tempo and clip recording, etc.
Let me scrub and loop non warped audio clips (WTF?!?)
Comping tracks
A basic LFO effect would be really nice...

Then I really think I wouldn't need to use Cubase at all.

As it stands today, nothing else will achieve what I need to do live, and Live still isn't good enough for me to ditch Cubase for "real" recording.

Not something I need or wish for in the slightest, are you serious?

All I want is a rock solid DAW as host platform for my tools. Ableton is brilliant and considering the intergration of Max was a huge head scratcher for them, I would say they have come along way.

You must have deep pockets for all these version changes?

Funny, but rock solid is not a term I would equate with live. If you'd like to see my crash logs...

Before anyone try Studio One, Reaper seems the better choice. Melodyne is integrated when you had buy a license, Melodyne needs a I-Lok.

I cannot compare Live & Studio One. Bitwig is more similar but we all have to wait what it brings. Maybe a lot of bugs at first & really good improvements on features.

my point of view.

Never tried Reaper... Im curious -- how is it in terms of ease of use / workflow? Easy like Ableton easy?
