Ive got the same endless indexing issue, though it's appearance seems random. It happens more often than not.

Fresh install of windows 8.1

Ableton 10.1.9

No plugins

No places/folders

Everything on a samsung SSD

It did it before downloading the factory packs, and after.

Hi,
The most common case when Places keep spinning is:
Any unknown file types for Ableton, like rar, zip archives in the User Library or other attached folders.
Pleas check it very carefully. You can easily do it with Total Commander by showing all files in current dir and all subdirs.
Luck.

I keep all my samples and projects in Dropbox and use Smart Sync to only keep the files that I need locally on my computer. Annoyingly, Ableton Live wants to download every file during indexing, so today marks the umpteenth time my hard drive was completely full and Ableton froze my computer. This is driving me absolutely nuts. Just give us an option to turn off indexing already!

For me the most annoying thing about the indexer is that it renders the interface unusable upon launch.
I got a massive amount of samples, unofficial packs, 3rd party & custom racks etc. added to places and the spinnig ball at every program launch drives me crazy.

I understand that it‘s useful to have the browser update in case some new files were added to a location but don‘t understand why the indexer can‘t be a little more unobtrusive.

as i find myself having to use the task manager to kill the Indexer process, so that I can save a project, a few times a day, i reflect on how miserable i am that Ableton does not consider this a showstopping bug to fix, but a "feature" to "wish for" (and conveniently ignore because they don't get enough complaints.) if it were a crashing bug that affected only one person, it would get fixed in the next release. that makes me angry.

here's a workaround for the Indexer not indexing stuff right away:

create a new empty folder in the location you want to have it scan, from *inside* the browser. that'll prompt an update.

Good God almighty, this indexer issue is causing problems. Bumping this in the hope that Ableton gets their crap together and disables / fixes this issue. Absolutely horrible.

Can you give a step-by-step instructions?

I can't believe how long this problem has been around while there's still no proper solution. I'm on Ableton 9 on a Mac and this has started happening making Ableton unusable. My fans spin out of control and my activity monitor spikes. Why is Ableton literally scanning every 5 seconds while nothing changes in my machine??

Those of you guy who find closing indexing helps, there is a workaround: using a hotkey tool such as autohotkey (windows, free).
It could go like this
a key combination to start ableton, wait for a few seconds and kill the indexing process.
I think you could make it idle instead.

Is everyone here using something like Dropbox for your User Library files?
(hint: that's not a good idea, and you shouldn't blame Live. Dropbox isn't designed to work as real-time sample player!)

No, just a regular folder with my samples on my SSD.

Ok.
I have very little knowledge about the indexer issue some of you are facing; it's best to write to support@ableton.com.
