Renaming of project / better version management

Post by golemus » Mon Apr 06, 2015 10:16 pm

Maybe there is already way to do this but I just dont know.

I spend quite a lot of time renaming files of a project. I give a typical example of my project workflow:

- I create a new tune named "a-new-tune-03-2015". When I save it, Ableton creates "a-new-tune-03-2015" folder and "a-new-tune-03-2015.als" project file inside it.
- I continue with the tune and soon when I have done it lets say after 3-6 hours (or just before risky change) I choose Save As..., and save it as "a-new-tune-03-2015-2.als"
- I repeat the same after 3-6 hours and get "a-new-tune-03-2015-2.als"
- I repeat this process maybe 7-8 times. During this timeframe I also export it a few times and get "ARTISTNAME-a-new-tune-03-2015-4.wav", and "ARTISTNAME-a-new-tune-03-2015-6.wav".

Now the tune has already soul and nature and I invent a real name for it, lets say the name will be "World-Of-Unliving". In order to do this I need to do all the following:

- rename "a-new-tune-03-2015.als" to "world-of-unliving1.als"
- rename "a-new-tune-03-2015-2.als" to "world-of-unliving-2.als"
- rename "a-new-tune-03-2015-3.als" to "world-of-unliving-3.als"
- rename "a-new-tune-03-2015-4.als" to "world-of-unliving-4.als"
- rename "a-new-tune-03-2015-5.als" to "world-of-unliving-5.als"
- rename "a-new-tune-03-2015-6.als" to "world-of-unliving-6.als"
- rename "a-new-tune-03-2015-7.als" to "world-of-unliving-7.als"
- rename "a-new-tune-03-2015-8.als" to "world-of-unliving-8.als"

- rename "ARTISTNAME-a-new-tune-03-2015-4.wav" to "ARTISTNAME-world-of-unliving-4.wav"
- rename "ARTISTNAME-a-new-tune-03-2015-6.wav" to "ARTISTNAME-world-of-unliving-6.wav"

Then I continue the project, get versions 9-20 of the new tune and also wav exports for versions 10, 14 and 20. Now I decide that I will change tune name from "World of Unliving" to "The Unliving".

In order to do this and keep my project clean I now need to rename 25 files. This is a huge unneccessary workload that should be automated. And it would not even be difficult. Easiest way to do this would be "rename project" item in "file" menu that would in addition to renaming the project rename all of these files (and WAV exports) automatically. Would be a huge timesaver :)

Another new feature that should be also implemented is "file - save a new version". This would obviously automatically save a new version with a new number so that you dont have to deal with the file dialogue.

I'd also like a "Rename Current Project" option. We've all probably started with a project named something like "Dmin sub" and then actually named it later on, but didn't want to "save as" the new project name because that just duplicates files and associations all over the place.

So, +1 for me.

I know this is an old thread, but: if you're on a Mac batch renaming is built in to the Finder. Just select a bunch of files, ctrl+click / right-click and choose Rename X Items… in the context menu. Choose Replace Text in the panel, and enter what you want to find and replace in the filenames. Hit Rename and you're done.
