Push2 Mix Volume Metter does not work for midi tracks

Post by _Ben » Sat Jul 22, 2017 9:54 am

Using Push2, when I switch to the mix view in Volume mode, audio tracks meters are animated with real-time meters volume activity. But midi tracks do not display anything (meters remains flat).

It would be nice for midi tracks to also display activity instead of nothing as it is the same function, in midi mode.

Note : using the Python API it could be done like this:

- For an audio track : display (track.output_meter_left + track.output_meter_right) / 2.0
- For a midi track : display track.output_meter_level

hmm... midi tracks also display their volume meters
Do your Live and Push version/firmware are up-to-date?

No I have just checked this and I see nothing peaking for midi only tracks on Push either.

Audio meters show fine but looking at a project where I have Midi tracks feeding a multi-timbre instrument the levels remain at zero on Push while the led dot meters in Live do peak when midi notes are played.

Certainly would be handy to have maybe a different display on Push that showed the midi velocity for the track on Push.

Hey guys, I can't reproduce here.
Are you plugging Push via a usb hub?

No i'm connected directly to the PC and everything is working just fine but for midi only tracks (with no instruments/FX loaded in the track) Push does not show the Midi activity in the mixer.

Here is a short video of this:

Code: Select all

audio tracks meters are animated with real-time meters volume activity
You write it yourself, it measures the activity of the volume.
And not the activity of a MIDI note, in the PUSH2 mixer.
I do not understand what you're doing with the MIDI track.
No instrument in it?
The MIDI TO box on (No Output)?
You can develop your idea.
Best regards JB

Not sure what you are chiming in with there...

The Mixer on Push is designed to reflect the mixer in Live. A mixer does not have to be JUST audio, in our DAWs case we have audio and MIDI.

Now, when you have a MIDI track without an instrument loaded you see a MIDI activity meter which shows the tracks activity. Controllers such as the Mackie MCU for instance have a "track activity" led which lights up showing that the track has activity (coincidental naming I am sure). This also lights up for both MIDI/Audio tracks so the OP (and I agree) is simply saying it would be beneficial for Push to also reflect this.

In regards to not understanding what I am doing with a track without an instrument in it, we all work in different ways and have different needs when it comes to this kind of thing. I use MIDI only tracks with multi-input VSTs to have a second MIDI channel play another layer within the VST. Instruments like Kontakt\Omnisphere are examples of where this is used often. Sometimes the track will have an external instrument loaded for return audio (so this would not be an issue) but in some cases you just need MIDI.

Okay, I thought you were thinking your PUSH had a problem with the VU METER of your second track. Now that you bring more details, I understand that it is a wish or an idea. This is more logical.
Just a precision on my part  , in your video, the vu-meter of the track 2 does not know changed in vu-metre audio (on the software I speak) so there is no instrument in the track, And in (MIDI to) I saw (No Output) that's why I did not understand your reasoning.
Sorry I only speak English with the Google translator so it is not easy to fully understand the meaning of the sentences and answer them :? .

Ok I get it too now, and indeed that's very different from a "mix volume meter".
That's not a bug.
I'm moving this to the feature wishlist forum.
