I don't think the old metaphor of splicing bits from multiple tracks is necessary or desirable for an exercise in auditory comparison. Simply being able to split a clip into phrases and change the take used by each phrase is all that's necessary.
As a guitar player, I can't stand that method, that's the way Reaper does it if you want that. I like the way DP and Logic do it.
It doesn't allow for selections to start or end at different times without as much work as there is in Live now.

I’m a guitar player as well. Not sure what that has to do with it. But there’s another thread for comping so that’s the last of this for me.

I get that it's a feature that might require a lot of changes and hence it might be hard to implement and takes!
(I work at a software company myself as a programmer...)

Though the way the Ableton team is handling communication with it's users is just absurd.
Having a rough estimated release time or at the very least the info if they are working on it would be the bare minimum of "decent" customer care.
Though leaving us users in the dark for years is just plain unprofessional. I expected something better when I purchased Ableton!

i strongly believe ableton and novation could make a fortune by implementing poly aftertouch and ofc sling out a new synth like the hydrasynth to rock it up,
in the dawless community theyre all hyped up about poly aft. and MPE right now, but why go dawless for that if ableton decides to focus on poly aft in their software and a few machines from novation that really works with it.

would be a dream come true, and lets not forget if WE can dream it, THEY can do it :D yay!

The oldest horse has the latest shit: Cubase 10.5 recognises MPE devices by itself and add's a separative MIDI device for it. I'm using Live with a trial license atm. I won't order a production license as long as solid mpe support is missing.
Cubase's midi stack implementation started in the in the 80's. The 'age of touched code' is only an argument, if you did a bad design in those days. Obviously Steinberg did it right in the old (pre oo programming) days ;-)

There is MPE output, it is selectable in MIDI Track's Output drop-down menus, not in Preferences.
