I don't think the old metaphor of splicing bits from multiple tracks is necessary or desirable for an exercise in auditory comparison. Simply being able to split a clip into phrases and change the take used by each phrase is all that's necessary.
As a guitar player, I can't stand that method, that's the way Reaper does it if you want that. I like the way DP and Logic do it.
It doesn't allow for selections to start or end at different times without as much work as there is in Live now.

I’m a guitar player as well. Not sure what that has to do with it. But there’s another thread for comping so that’s the last of this for me.

I get that it's a feature that might require a lot of changes and hence it might be hard to implement and takes!
(I work at a software company myself as a programmer...)
Though the way the Ableton team is handling communication with it's users is just absurd.
Having a rough estimated release time or at the very least the info if they are working on it would be the bare minimum of "decent" customer care.
Though leaving us users in the dark for years is just plain unprofessional. I expected something better when I purchased Ableton!
