Microtuning of internal instruments

Post by jimble » Fri Feb 16, 2018 12:45 pm

More and more musicians (like Aphex Twin) are exploring other music scales besides the familiar 12 equal division of the octave. Given the experimental nature of Ableton Live it would be sad if this great program should fall behind. My feature suggestion is therefore a Microtune device that would work with all of Ableton Live’s internal instruments. Since a growing library of more than 3000 alternative scales has already been collected in the Scala archive, it would make sense to implement import of Scala files into the Microtune device.

Damn. Bitwig has an irritating tendency to make everything Ableton should do.

Also increase the Pitch Bend range of internal instruments. Because most native instruments don't have the +-48 semitones range you need for most tuning techniques.

Another approach is to load a tuning file into a synth that is capable of retuning. There are a ton of them available and some of them are free. Here is a comprehensive list.

I made a Max for Live plugin that maps incoming notes to the spacing of the re-tuned synth, so that way you don't have to rewrite your composition. Running your notes through Microposer, you can manually fine tune the harmonies to any notes within the microtonal scale.

Was just watching a performance from and reading about Arushi Jain / Modular Princess, and watching a great video from Sounds Good on youtube about Just Intonation and Equal Temperament.

A big ol ++ to this feature wish! Project and instrument level microtuning in Live would be a game changer.

Thanks for the fantastic program!
