AAC Audio Support

Post by kineticUk » Thu Sep 01, 2005 3:14 am

I hope ableton update live 5 to recognise AAC Files as well as MP3 FLAC etc
It sounds like another good alternative to using mp3s and is supposed to be better soundquality/compression.
At the moment Live doesnt recognise these files as far as Im aware as they dont show up in the browser.
AAC is included in Itunes
Could you update Live 5 to support this ableton?

Supporting both AAC and MP3 would be an extra nice bonus.

It's like them supporting AIFF and WAV as they do now. Then they would have one file format for each platform in both compressed and uncompressed.

At the same bitrate, AAC sounds better than MP3 anyway.

Upsampling an AAC from itunes to an AIFF or WAV to run it in Live wastes lots of space. And the conversion process from AAC to MP3 degrades it's quality.

Especially at 128k AAC sounds way better than an mp3.

IMO AAC's 128k and above are adequate for playing on a nice speaker system. mp3's you have to go to at least 192k for it to be useable and even then, there's something a little strange going on in the highs. It's subtle aliasing and whatnot, but it's still there and it grinds on me after awhile.

I can usually tell when someone's playing 128kb mp3's at a club just by listening alone. After an hour or 2 it kind of gets on my nerves, like I can actually "hear" that some of the music is missing. I know part of the sound should be there, but it's not. Kind of like watching an old VCR tape on a 50" plasma display. The pixels are all blown up and gritty. Then when you pop the DVD of the same movie in, your eyes feel much more relaxed and you can enjoy the movie more.

AAC sounds better...it's standard for itunes, and anyone with a Mac can rip one. I think AAC is more for musicians and people who care about fidelity. Medium bitrate mp3's are OK for the general consumer and for young kids who swap music.

guys, keep in mind that even if Live had AAC support, it wouldn't be able to play 'protected' AAC's from the Apple music store (nor can any app that isn't iTunes).

Sorry I couldnt care a less about playing protected itunes files as I have not yet used that service but understand alot of people are misinterpreting AAC support for this (drc24 has kindly pointed out that if you buy songs on itunes they use this format. I have not bought any yet myself so I dont know what the protection part is all about).
So Just to confirm AAC is a format (Like MP3) which you have access to if you use itunes Mac (PC? I am not sure but would have thought so).
I usually convert my own songs to AAC for saving space and listening 2 on my computer (Keep the Aiff/Wav Backup masters on CD or whatever) and as I also have a massive music collection which I love playing made up of old records and CDs, I would love to be able to play all the records/cds I have converted to AAC myself inside Live 5 without converting to MP3 first.

I used to convert to 192k MP3 which sounded ok
Now I use AAC at same bitrate and stuff sounds nice.

Thanks to everybody above for their comments and keeping this post active
Hopefully ableton will read it.

It should replace it now, it's here and works. However, the only reason to use mp3 is because everyone else is still using them. :?
