Wanted desperatly:

1-64 steps that can be toggled on/off via MIDI along with
1-64 encoders that can be connected to control one parameter (for each step)

A MIDI-controllable step sequencer would be very handy!

Yepp.

* There are very few, if any VST/AU alternatives. At least on the mac.
* This would unleash new live performance capabilities for midi hardware and software.

Pardon my ignorance but what's a step seq? Is it like Fruity Loops, Reason, etc??

Redrum in reason has a step seq on it.

There is something like it in Live allready. You can draw sequences and drumclips with the pen tool. But it is limited to using the mouse. Steps cannot be toggled with a controller. And you dont use it live, which could be a good thing in ... Live.

A midi device would be a natural way to go.

Only 32 steps but I may do a 64 step version after I fine tuned the new sequencer I made for live 7.

Hoffman: I saw this one at http://puremagnetik.com/ and have used it a little. It is a ruff and dirty road to something that should be built in to Live.

And the fact that this solution exists is a clear sign that a real device is needed.

Thanx anyway

it would be bad ass if you could midi map notes in midi clip editor.

Ive thought of using a touch screen monitor(mon out on my pwrbook). but I'm not sure how proficient that would be.
It would be excellent for live drum editing as the sequence is scrolling.

Its hardly the same (imho). Its 1/5th of the Covert Seq.
I'd say the sequencer I made is one of the most feature rich step seqs available for Ableton Live. And thanks to some small improvements to Live 7, its probably one of the most powerful ones too.
One small example... The MIDI Pitch plugin now goes from -128 to +128 instead of -48 to +48. This means you can reach EVERY note with 1 knob.

I don't spend much time on these boards, and am uncertain of the etiquette here. Is there an accepted way to campaign for this, and draw more attention to the request? I don't want to bump the thread, I'm asking sincerely...

Underwaterlab: it would make me very surprised and disapointed if the Abes did not respond to this request, because my impression is that the listen to users and good ideas.

And I am sure they have seen this thread.
Hopefully not to late to implement it in L7.

Well it is obviously to late to implemente it in live 7 :P But it is a very good idea.

Though I must admit that you made a hell of a job Hoffman2K!!! Your step makes me wonder if ableton really needs to implement one. Imagine using it with a JazzLemur... wow, rock & roll baby!
