faster and cleaner browser browsing
faster and cleaner browser browsing
the browser needs a new way of accessing files faster without leaving a mess..
typical usage creates such a mess within a few clicks, loads of scrolling, etc etc..
as I suggested before..
one click on the top layer folder shows sublayers..

I really feel the browser is getting a workflow bottleneck..longjohns wrote:Something

People are all about session and arrange on separate screens.
But I'm wanting a second monitor filled with like 6 independent browser windows
sooo much content, so less space and smart handling..
we need at least 5 user file browsers..
but not only more browsers cause that means even more clutter..
we desperately need a smart system and behaviour..
like folders that will close automatically after certain user behaviour..
sort of self maintenance..
for instance there could be key short cuts to certain locations,
that will be cleaned up (auto close folders and such) after you did at least say 3 actions outside the browser,
so the browser knows it's obvious you do not want to return to that last visited location immediately after that browser visit..
sort of under the hood intelligence..
this sounds nice, but I can imagine complications because my entire keyboard is mapped to functions - seems like they'd have to disable when in the browser...Poster wrote:or if you select the audio effects folder,
then press 's',
the selection jumps to the first device starting with the letter 's'..
same as how your OS handles this kind of navigation..
small details, better flow..
now you try to use some mappings, and they don't work because you had just clicked in the browser window - getting confused, etc.
maybe it's not much different than when renaming things. but that is more deliberate than looking in the browser. i.e. you are not just clicking on something, you're clicking on it and then using a command (when renaming)

Totally agree with you, Poster.
The browser is one of the things that still bug me a lot (especially with the live devices).
And I'm still using the Windows Explorer a lot to browse samples (if it only had a preview...)

Thinkpad T60, M-Audio Audiophile, BCR2000, padKontrol, Axiom 49, Klein + Hummel O-300
I'd love to see dedicated library and current project buttons instead of having to use the weird little arrow circle thing.

A better search field would be nice. Just let live index all your stuff on install or something like that to streamline it. I like the behaviour in logic 8 where you can give parameters/keywords/category's to samples, instruments all kinds of clips and then just select which one you want or search for it.
Of course it's a lot of work getting all your material sorted, but in the end it should really streamline your work flow. And new live packs will be already categorised for you of course.

I like where you are going. your suggestion would help, but I bet there is porbably an even better solution.
+1 for making browsering better.
Tips: I use the <- key to jump up a folder and close it. Also if you have your hand on the mouse, right click "close all folders" is used a lot here. Don't use search too much...
One SMALL inprovement I want is, like the mac/windows convention, when the browser is active, I can start typing a device name to go to it.
Can't tell you howmany times I've tried to press "s" to go to simple delay.

This stuff needs to be in Live 8 - otherwise, given the amount of content users are typically accessing, it's going to be like swimming through treacle.
On a realted note...
What tips do you all use from a users' perspective to keep things organized?
e.g. do you put all your found and made samples in the Library? Do you have folder conventions and naming conventions. Looking for things that require minimal effort or only changing habits that make a big difference.
