External Instrument II
External Instrument II
EDIT: Here's an updated version of my suggested improvement to the
External Instrument, allowing you to control rewired instruments with Live's rack
knobs. I think the image is self-explanatory, but the gist of it is: you select a
Reason parameter from the drop-down on the new version of the External
Instrument, and map that parameter to a macro by using the dummy
"parameter" button. What this effectively would do, is telling the macro knob
what CC to pass on to the Reason device.

I totally agree with you but I'd like to add something to make it even more useful. I have asked during L7 beta program to let the Ext Instrument have Program Change capability like it should be in every modern DAW.
Why do I need a clip to change a patch on my external MIDI hardware?
As ice on the cake I also would like to have the presets of the external device appear as a drop down list that behind the scenes sends the correct Program Change. This can be easily done by creating an helper application outside live that reads a text file with Patch description + program change that is in turn attached to the external instrument.
By doing this any MIDI Hardware will be treated as it should be.

Bump, and update!
I realised that there must be an even easier way of doing this:
When you rewire to Reason and pick the "MIDI control" dropdown in the
envelopes box, you actually get all the Reason parameter names instead of
the CC numbers, so it really ought to be possible to simply point a macro knob
to a parameter name. I mean if you use another, dedicated knob on your
controller to send a specific CC to the rewired app., you're doing the exact thing
that I want to do. The only difference is that I want to be able to do this via a
macro knob instead.
Pretty please, Ableton!

Also add the ability to create instrument definitions for the hardwaresporkles wrote:
I've suggested this before, and I partially got my wish in the External
Instrument, and this is the next step, really. It's an Instrument Rack / External
Instrument hybrid, which lets you send MIDI CCs from the macro knobs. 'Map
mode' lets you set the desired CC number, the arrow lets you show/hide the
macro knobs (hiding them collapses the device to its current form), and that's
really all there is to it. (Maybe also add a button that lets you add more macro
controls) This would let you use the same controller preset for your
rewire/hardware devices as the one you use for Live's devices. No fuss, no
messing about with clip envelopes unless you really want to. It would also
be cool if you, in map mode, would get the same list of CC parameters you
get when opening the 'midi control' dropdown in the clip envelope box, so
that the macro knob could be automagically renamed to fit the parameter.
Could you dig it? If so - help me bump this one, so that we can be sure that
the Abes read it

+1 on this. This is one of the things that I feel is really holding me back... (realizes he's just making excuses, but still thinks this is a great idea.)
Instrument rack macros AND combinators!?!?!?!??!?! Awesomeness.
