Re-naming midi parameters in clip envelopes

Post by Gtrance » Thu Oct 09, 2008 9:53 am

Hello,

This may well not be possible but I'm hoping one of you Live wizards have some crazy complex workaround to do it.

I have a Virus TI and I use it in Live as a VST. Lately I've been automating the virus parameters using the midi clip envelopes for each part (as oppose to using the actual parameter list on the Virus track)

This is all well and good but obviously the midi envelope list is just controller 21, controller 22, controller 23 etc etc. Because of this, it can become tricky to remember what each midi controller number is actually automating and I'm having to constantly refer back to my printout of the midi cc numbers for the virus.

Is there a way via racks or something for me to setup a template to rename the midi envelope controller numbers to what they will actually be used for?

Here's hoping!!

you can map to rack macros.. and rename them...
however..there are only 8 of them...

Thanks for the suggestion but yeah 8 would be too limited. As although I wouldn't normally automate more than 8 parameters per part, the parameters themselves would be different every time so I would need to set it up and rename everytime I did something which would be pointless.

Does this mean it cannot be done?

yes, but in case you suggest I automate on the virus channel, which will be clearly labelled, the reason why I dont is because I dont like having all automation for different parts on the same channel. Partly because of my own workflow but mainly because, when I move and re-arrange clips, I have to then go to the virus track, find any automation for that section of clip and move it aswell, which can be a pain in the arse if there is a lot of automation going on.

If that wasnt the reason you asked, then ignore all that

well... what I do is this...
make 2 Midi tracks...
1 for sending notes...
and another for sending CC automation...

on the CC track...
make empty clips corresponding to each parameter on the Virus...
label each clip with the name of the paramater ...
...then draw 1 automation point only for that parameter...
(or whatever automation you want...the point is... that only 1 Midi cc will be marked as used)
you now have a midi track with a clip for each parameter on the synth...
only 1 clip can play on 1 midi track...
so.. if you want to automate another parameter...
just duplicate the CC Midi track...
and press play on another clip...
(all them midi tracks should be routed to the Virus)

But wouldn't I end up with a stack of midi tracks assuming I want to automate multiple parameters at once?

...yeah... 1 track per running automation paramater...
but it could be neatly laid out... (for instance ...I color code sections... oscillator section ... filter section...and so on...
of course you can resize them all at will)
...

a bit of work setting it up...
but it's solid and easy and fun once you have...

I also have a set of dummy clips which hold different envelopes drawn...
It alows me to copy/paste envelopes that I like to use...
(different lfo/random shapes)
into whichever clip I want...

shame about the midi sync though...

So over ten years has passed since this topic was brought up, is there now a way to do this in Live?

Having the envelopes named just "MIDI Ctrl | 15 - (Controller)" and so on is not a very intuitive, so a way to rename them would be great.

Even better if I also can edit the envelope names and then save this external instrument as a template and name it after the device I am controlling. And then I can just drop it in another project or arrangement and have the envelope names in Ableton instead of looking it up again in the device users manual.
