[c74] Random crashes while saving

I realize there are a few threads reporting crashes while saving, but I don't have any ideas on how to narrow it down.

I'm working on a patch, try to save the patch. Live crashes. Max will let me save the patch but will keep asking every time I try to close the patcher. Causing me to double check if the save actually happened. Either it saved and crashed or let me save afterwards.

Since this happens quite a lot but can't be reproduced with the same steps, I collected a few Crash Packs. You'll find them in the mfl-beta@ableton.com mailbox under the same title as this thread.

Osx 10.5.8 / C2D 1.83 / 2GB Ram / Max 40856 / Live 8.1b7

Max crashed every time I try saving a patch.

Surprisingly, it seems to remember the patch once Max starts back up (probably from Live's undo history?- I don't recall this luxury from within max)

Probably related, I never see an updated representation within Live of the patch I am working on.

To be clear, my report is different from the 2 that followed. My issue is not a "save as" bug.
I save using CMND-S in the editor and its Live that crashes.

Ok, if it's just crashing with save is it all patches?
New patches, example patches, big patches, small patches, if you can narrow it down that would be great.

If you can get one of your own to semi regularly crash on save then please send it to us.

I've mainly been working on the same patch. I wish I could narrow down the cause, but the save is what triggers the crash. So I can't see a specific cause other than that.
I'm working with live.remote~ in the patch, but its mostly a consolidation of the API examples.

I'll mail you the device. But I have no instructions on how to make it crash. It just happens while patching and I save a lot.

Is there anything more involved in the creation of this crash than just saving a patch?

Do you have steps, or are you working on a particular device?

We have a 10.4.11 setup, but we're not seeing anything wrong, so any missing details you might have would really help

I seem to be having a possibly related problem with installing the mfl livepack. These problems may be two heads of the same beast.

Regarding what I am doing in mfl: I have tried saving a variety of different devices that were either built prior with max 5, downloaded from the ableton forum, came as content but had to be cut and pasted from Max into a mfl patch. No luck, whatsoever.

It feels a bit lame to be stuck at this stage for almost a day now. I would really like to contribute in a more exciting manner.

How about

-Start Live
- drag Max Audio instrument into an audio track to create a default device
- hit the edit button
- do something, save as
- close and go back to Live

At what point does it crash? If it does crash, please email me the crash report off list

Hey, max is crashing, not live. I have never mailed a max crash report before. What is the protocol. Also, regarding the Max audio instruments... would these be items from the Live pack that I cannot open? Or are these the same items that I can find under max5-patches- that have .maxpat appended to them? So far the only things that I have been able to drag into live have had .amxd and those have been downloaded from the internet separately.

Problem exist with max midi effect and max audio instrument allways in same moment. Save.

I can reproduce this at the moment, computer has been freshly rebooted:

1. Open Ableton and create new liveset
2. Drag 'Max Midi Effect' live device template on to the midi track
3. Click the little max for live button to open patch
4. Save the patch in max.

It crashes, there are two dialogue boxes:
a generic dialogue pops up saying 'Then applicatio MaxMSP quit unexpectadly'
an ableton styled dialogue box says 'The max function saveaschooser returned with error 9999 (internal error)

Strangely enough i was working on and saving patches fine all night last night, it's a really random problem. Last time i fixed it by using 'save' instead of 'save as' but save doesn't work either now.

Ableton 8.1b7
M4L 5.1.0b8 (40856)
Macbook Pro 2.2ghz core 2 duo
4gb 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM

interestingly, i moved some of the midi tutorial patches into a folder under max midi devices, this seemed like it created a copy of the originals.



if i open one of these tutorial files and directly save over it, i can save my patch.
if i try to use 'save as' i get the same crash however.

strange.
