Launchpad: No way to observer grid in user 1 mode?

I can't for the life of me figure out how to observe button pushes while in user 1 mode. the ButtonMatrix doesn't work and neither does the individual button controls..

any ideas?

After thought, is it possible someway with the M4L api to observe when the selected track changes or to be able to find a track by name? If it is I think I can find a work around to my problem using the user1 mode.

I figured out a workaround: mapped some buttons to an eq 3 that was turned off and then listened for changes to the device via the api..

phew
