Just bought Max. All messages indicate it was installed. But it does not show up in any folders.
I am on OSX 10.4.11--- could that be the problem?

No, M4L should actually work perfectly with 10.4.11 (it does here)
There is a folder in your applications that says "Max5". But you should't open from there, but via Live. There might be some extra care as you first install and launch live with m4l, I don't exactly remember, all I remember is that it was pretty straightforward. After this every time you load a max device into live and click its edit button: you are inside max.

Cool. Yes, I see the "Max" folder in app folder. But I'm still in the dark as to how to get this working.
