Comber changed sound with Live 8.2.2 / M4L 5.1.8

Post by Kvebt » Fri Apr 15, 2011 7:15 pm

I have used the pluggo effect comber in one production. After the update this device changed the behavior a the sound was not that harsh anymore. I liked the sound before much more. Why is that?

Is this a general behavior of M4L devices after the update?

this is indeed infuriating.

the entire range of pluggo devices were comprehensively updated by manuel poletti i presume for max 518. this is a good thing as they seriously needed it, and in general, no, the devices have not changed sound quality too much but got more efficient and much much much easier to read / mod. however, judging by your experiences it seems comber has changed considerably. i am sure this is not bad-intentional and most probably to do with the better filtering poletti has applied overall in the pluggo suites, as evidenced by the much better organised abstractions and what not.

so, what i did for you was to extract the live support '.alp' file from the old 5.1.7 installer to see if i could get at the old comber device. however, it seems live is too 'clever' - it will not let me extract that single device regardless of what i try.

so, two options - 1, appeal to cycling 74 to make the old code available for you - i am sure they would be happy to do this; 2, uninstall live 8.2.2 / max 5.1.8, then install live 8.2.1 / max 5.1.7. then make your own backup of the old comber device (and call it something different). then upgrade again to live 8.2.2 / max 5.1.8. completely insane and annoying, but depends if you are that desperate for it or not.

if i had known the updates of all the devices would be so drastic i would have made backups myself before updating. i will be backing up the 'big three' shortly as they desperately require the poletti touch and hopefully will receive their updates soon.

ok, in a hilarious twist to my story, i decided to rummage through some hard drives, and guess what - i had a strange backup of the old comber as a max patch from november 2009.

so i stuck it and the required .maxpat in a .amxd and you can download it from here:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2648006/oldComber.zip

just stick it [the entire folder after unzipping] in your presets path, maybe next to the new comber. i did not have a back up of the presets unfortunately.

i decided not to freeze it in keeping with the other pluggos so careful.

...please let me know when you have downloaded as i will delete it after. thanks.

Awesome.

Really couldn't believe that only the patch was the source. I thought the handling within Max 5.1.8 would be a different.

Now I enjoy my old comber sound.

Thanks for that!
