Exponential-curve patch for controlling MIDI?

Post by samtastic » Sat May 14, 2011 4:51 am

hi all,
as far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong), this can't be done in Ableton (without Max):

I want to map the resonance and freq cut-off of a HP filter to a single knob, but as the frequency rises, the resonance (Q) rises exponentially (rather than linearly). I want to be able to filter sweep low frequencies without distorting/blowing out the bass, but then really emphasize the highs during a full sweep.

I think this kind of thing should be standard in Ableton, in the MIDI Mappings window, so that you could individually control the curve of MIDI messages by right-clicking (like you can adjust the curve of the cross fader).

So does anyone know of a work-around/Max Patch that'll allow this kind of exponential MIDI curve?

Obviously, if I had the free knobs on my MIDI controller, I'd map an individual knob to freq and Q, but I've run out of knobs! as always ; )

Regards
Sam

Is you are building your own filter have a look at the "scale" object. Its 5th argument can be used to scale values exponentially.

Try out the new Modulator Device: http://www.maxforlive.com/library/device.php?id=651

Just use two of those devices and draw different curves for the cut-off and resonance.

Since pitch is exponentially scaled, you can sometimes use mtof to generate exponentially mapped frequencies. I'm not sure that this passes for a "secret Max trick," but it's not something widely done.

I used this for my one-knob filter:

It's like the scale object, but better.
