As another person who isn't overly satisfied with the synths packaged in Live, I started using the KarmaFX modular synth demo and it's easily the nicest synth I've used so far. I absolutely love what this thing can do and it's not expensive.
But building a modular synth feels like a good opportunity to put 6-7 months of Max learning into practice, even if I fail miserably.
Are there things in something like KarmaFX that it'll be impossible to aspire to in Max? And is there any useful reading to get started with? the Darwin Grosse synth-building guide on Cycling74 is quite outdated at this stage.
