Real time sampling with max for live?

Post by prprprpr » Tue Apr 15, 2014 6:38 pm

Hello people,

I dream to make patch where you create pattern in piano roll, hit the record button and sample the input which immediately starts play the pattern you made. Just like a sampler, but you could change sample in real time. I want to use this for my guitar playing. You just play one note on guitar and it goes crazy... Any ideas where should i start? I know just basics of max msp... Would be grateful for any suggestions!

I don't even know the basics of what you are asking.

Please explain more clearly what it is you want. Because you're throwing out like three different ideas that don't really seem related.

The pattern in the piano roll is manipulating a sample that you just captured?

This can quite easily be done in Maschine (even as a plugin in Live) or Reason.

As max devices there are SK-5 and zb.threeBufs which come close to what you want.

ahh was really looking forward for some replies, thank you!!

the idea:

i want to create midi pattern which is running on loop in ableton, then i play note on guitar(into max4live device) it captures it and that note starts playing that pre-made midi pattern, when i play another note on guitar, it replaces the one recorder and keeps playing without a pause. This is the main idea, i hope that's clear enough?

I think that sk-5 patch is aaalmost the thing i want, amazing. thank you mothergarage. it doesn't play exact pattern, doesn't react so very well to midi note duration. If your midi pattern has short notes, it only records that small portion, so you can't have long notes anymore, it's monophonic, doesnt react to midi chord. when you press record, audio drops, so it's not good for real time performing and that's the main thing i want,

if you have any more suggestions, please let me know! thank you all again.

Still a little unclear on how the midi clip is supposed to affect the sample.
Will it play the sample back and transpose it based on pitch of the midi note in the pattern?

This is doable, but it will require a bit of creative routing of data.

yes, it should transpose according to midi notes in the pattern, the same with duration and rhythm. and if you have poly midi notes, it should let play 2 at the same time.

it's kinda challanging to make patch like that for me, but if i would manage, this would be such a cool device.

You could totally do this. Be a bit of work, but doable.
The polyphony could be handled by using poly~
The midi stuff would be easy (relatively).
The recording would be more challenging, you'd have to play around with the best way to define when to record, and when to not record into the sample buffer.

This video gives almost all the info youll need unless you need polyphony.

Just open max and watch the video, pause it often and make your patch look exactly like his.

if you're into patching i made a live performance once using only that concept (pre-made midi patterns playing audio recorded on the fly) with max for live. Greatly improvable, though, but fun.
