I am running into all kinds of strange issues with M4L
Of late I have been getting a lot of error codes with Amazing Noises's Darksynth, which tells me that there may be an incompatability between it and the version of Max I am running.
The Ableton article on 'what version of Max do I have' tells me I can find out by loading a Max effect and opening the editor
https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/max-info/
When I try to do that, nothing happens. Live just says, 'starting Max editor' and fuck all happens. The device 'grays out' and then reverts to normal. And there I sit.
What gives? How can I un-fuck Max? How do I make sure I have the latest build?

On a Mac right?
Go to the applications folder and find the Max folder. Look inside for the app icon and check the version.
6.1.10 is the latest.

I've had this before and it was because I was trying to open 32bit max forgive with 64bit Live and vice versa...

Aha. I had 6.1.9. Hopefully that solves it. Thanks!
