Live and Max stuck when saving a device

I have to force quit both apps. This happens since I upgraded to version 9.7 and Max 7.3
Any similar cases ?

Also happens with Max 7.31. I can't edit and save a device anymore. This is a drama ! Anyone else ?

It's OK on my systems, both Win 10 and OSX El Capitan.

Late response, but also on my end no issues. However, I can't help wonder if you had any issues when you first started Live 9.7? When I had just upgraded it I couldn't even start it because it would immediately crash. I ended up de-installing and re-installing Live 9 and that did the trick for me: no issues at all anymore.

Now, this is probably unrelated to your issues, but I cannot help wonder. If you encounter more oddities with Live 9 then my advice would be to seriously consider a clean re-installation. Just the software of course, you don't have to mess with your user settings and such.

Thanks Shelluser, but Live 9.7 seems to work reliably as long as I don't want to edti some M4L device... Oh and btw, you had a fantastic ressource page about the LOM years ago. I wanted to point some of my students to it but can't find it anymore. Do you still have it ?

Bizarre, can't come up with a logical explanation.

Do you also own a Max 7 license or only M4l? I'd try to see how Max 7 behaves stand alone, so simply start it, see if you can make a crude patch and then quit it (you can't save anyway while in trial mode). If that behaves normally then it could hint at a specific Live issue and not so much Max.

Yeah, my website is still alive but I merged it with my main hobby site, and it's also a little less maintained due to time restraints. I think you're referring to this page? Basically the one which explained the LOM.Navigator (which is also in dire need of a rehaul)?

My signature also contains the new/current URL of the SynthFan website.

The patch, apart from the mapping API part, works perfectly with 1% CPU usage in Max standalone, so this is on li've's part it seems.

I had the old "Trial not started" issue again this week.
I reinstalled Max, and it still persisted, I re-authorised my Live license, and it still persisted through a reboot, and some Live restarts.
Then it fixed itself.

this happens once every two months or so.

could it be that it's java related ? The last device I tried to save without success is a mapping bpatcher containing some java stuff. But the [plugsync~] device that failed once to save was not...

I don't use java.
I do almost everything in Javascript, but .. obviously, that's only related in name.

In 9.7 one thing I've noticed when this M4L auth failure happens : When I reopen Live it shows the "Welcome to Live 9 - What's new & Lessons" pane. As if this is my first run. So that's odd too.

I reauthorised Ableton Live via I choose Live 9 https://www.ableton.com/en/account/authorize/ it shows the correct path for my Live application. So, I authorise that (yet again) and the Live application reports "Opening A different version of Live, do you want to save this set". But ... there is no different version of Live. There is only one version, the version at that path, which I am re-authorising. So what is it trying to open? That application is already open.

Current Status for Today: M4L is saving files.
Status for tomorrow : undetermined. Probably broken again, like yesterday and today.

Opinion: This software pairing does not feel robust and tightly integrated. quite the opposite.

Probably the one thing you and I completely agree on when it comes to M4L. The whole pairing of two separate apps with a bit of code that lets them talk to each other has always seemed a bit clunky to me. Of course integrating a special version of Max within Live's codebase might be monumental task and could even require a ground-up rewrite of Live.

But that's exactly what I expected when M4L was first announced and I still think it could be an amazing step if they decided to re-engineer the entire M4L environment so that it is native to Live and not dependent on installing the standalone Max app.
