Dehumaniser - How is it done?

Hey all.

I demoed Dehumaniser VST and I'm impressed with how good it sounds. Definitely better than any effects rack I've fumbled together.

Wondering if any of you DSP wizards could shed some light as to how the sounds are achieved. I was thinking pitch shifting and vocoding at first but there seems to be more to it than that. Some kind of convolution stuff.

How would you go about creating monstrous sounds without this specialist software - and beyond just pitch shifting?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Vocoding a pitched down vocal with animal sounds as the external. But also using the resulting sound to inverse gate more animal sounds, which are mixed in.
